View Full Version : Are the spammers being irritating?

Since May '08 all vBulletin forums are being hit by spammers who "manually" register and then send bursts of posts over a few seconds. One post per thread, in about 5 threads. They are easy to spot and to delete. It happens about twice a week at the moment.

I am not too worried about it, and I am keeping an eye on what vBulletin is doing about it (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=275885). However, I wonder if any of the regular members are more affected by it than me? Are these spammers sending out Personal Messages via this forum? If you are subscribed to a thread, you will get their spam to your e-mail, which would be irritating.

Any thoughts?

Gerald,

I have not received any thing as of yet.

You are doing an excellent job with regards to the number of spammers that have gotten through. The most I have ever seen is on your last trip.

Thanks

The way to delete these blitz spammers is to:

1. Hit the "report this post" button on ONE of the spammer's posts (red triangle icon near the post #).

That sends an e-mail to all the mods, and gives me the username to ban later.

2. Then a mod can look at the profile of that user, select "Find all posts by . . . . ", check the "Select All" box and then delete. It only takes 3 seconds to delete most of the traces.

If step 1 was not followed first, I would be unaware of the latest spammer and would not know that a banning is needed.

These are the problems:

Gerald...
I've been using this site almost daily for about two years and until you just posted the spammer problem, I didn't even realize they existed.

I really thought I was paying more attention to the posts...:D

Gerald,
I have noticed a few instances but they have vanished in short order! It is not a problem for me at all. You are doing a great job. Easy to delete emails if a spammer gets through as well. :)

In the last day or so, many vbulletin forums have been massively hit by spammers. We are okay up to now. However, should it happen here, this forum may be shut down for new registrations for a while, while I implement more of the following:

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=275800

Are there any really experienced vbulletin admins out there that could help me with this?

G' in another forum of which I am a member of - www.team-bhp.com,

there a number of mod's who are given access to chk the first few posts of a new member to know if they are or not spammers.

The Mod's have the direct access to terminate the membership, in our case mod's could forward termination requests to you if spammers are found.

An new posts by new members are distributed across the Mod's equally and they are allowed to take a decesion whether to allow the post or not.

in that forum a minimum of 50 post are moderated before a member gets full access.

Hope this helps.

Regards
Irfan.

About 9 hours ago a spammer tried to post 5 messages. However there is now a bit of software on this site which diverts those messages to a part of this forum which is supposed to be invisible. Did anyone notice the spammer's attempts? If not, good! :)

Gerald,

I think vBulletin is doing an excellent job with the spammer problem or your web host is. I wish more people used vBulletin for their forum.

Gerald,

I didn't see a thing, no spam what so ever... also not private.
