Just recently found this site with a ton of info www.cnc4free.org and cannot believe how much free and cheap stuff is out there. Be sure to check out the "Essentials" page which has some tried and proven software for modeling, vector conversions, etc. Also don't miss the "Links" page with even more info. I purchased the e-book which has a lot of details on how to utilize the programs on the "Essentials" page.
