In drawing number 10 20 400. In the drawing just above the notes, the The drawing number given to the Gantry end sub weldment is wrong. It should be 10 20 450 W. It is written as 01 20 450 W.

The downloads page contains newer sets of pdf files. More assemblies and parts lists, some small detail parts. All the mechanicals are now complete. Still to do are the cable carrier chain supports and control box, but Xmas will probably happen before then.

The latest profiles .dxf were changed to accommodate pinion gears up to 35 teeth on 1/2" racks.

I have just been asked the meanings of the drawing "process" codes. This is the rough idea:

A: ASSEMBLY, NORMALLY CAPABLE OF DISASSEMBLY
W: WELDED, NOT FOR DISASSENBLY
S: CUT BY SAWING FROM "LENGTHS" STOCK
G: CUT BY GUILLOTINE FROM SHEET STOCK
K: SPRING (K is often used as the "spring constant")
T: TURNED ON A LATHE by a Machinist
D: DRILLED, WITH OR WITHOUT TAPPED THREADS
M: MILLED or Ground, by a Machinist
P: PROFILE CUT, TYPICALLY LASER
H: HARDEN, HEAT TREATED.
B: BEND

Hi Gerald.

While doing the parts in sketchup I noticed what appears to be an error with the strut bracket, 10 40 380 S. The cut length is 98mm, but once bent is only 20.5 on the short leg and 49.5 on the long leg, cut length should only be about 70mm.

For part no 10 40 386 B, bend angle is not indicated (side view shows about 45 deg bend, top and end views show 90 deg bend). On the drilling page, dimensions are ommitted.

Rev B of drawings now have a note saying to check against purchased gas spring & motor springs - 18/05/2007

Hi Alan

You are quite correct. Those two parts are tricky because they depend on the dimensions of the parts fitted to them - the gas spring and the spring. It is going to be best to bend them, hold them in place, mark the holes off against the springs, drill the holes and then trim them to length. I still need to write these notes on those drawings......... (it was a rush just to get the partscount and part numbers in place)

Hey, surely you've found bigger mistakes than these?! ......:-)

Gerald,
I may have run accross a mistake in the plans as I was working on getting these quotes all done.

Drawing 10.30.422 BA the width is 482
Drawing 10.30.422 PB the width is 602

Can you confirm 602 is correct?

Yes, the 602 is correct. I shouldn't have had that 482 on the bend drawing because the bending is done on the laser engraved lines. (the 482 would have been meaningless to a bender anyway) Will be fixed in next release. Thanks!

7 Drawing sheets revised slightly this weekend. They are combined in this .pdf file (530kB)

Some of those drawings affect the .dxf drawings for the laser cutting. A fresh set of .dxf's are here (191kB zip)

Well-spotted - I scaled the dimension when I scaled the view! The bend lines are actually engraved at 50mm apart by the 10 20 456 P drawing in dxf format. Thanks, will correct for the next release.

Hi Gerald,

How can one have the latest plans in DXF or DWG instead of PDF?
I have on records many of them from 2006 but too many seems to be updated. I would like to clean & update all those before going any further since I prefer outsourcing & working with DXF and/ or DWG direct in AutoCad !
Thanks, Robert

Robert: Here is some info on the process:

I found it in this index on Cad Digest:

Thanks David,
But this is not what I’m hopping to get (if not to much asking?) ! !
Since I work mostly (99%) with a 3D software, I was hopping to import the new updated files.
Unless I’m mistaken, it always better to have the originals in dxf or dwg in order to have some parts commission ( Lazer cut, V-Roller housing…)?
Also, unless I’m getting to rusty and excuse me for loosing some with AutoCad usage, your suggested approach only enable to see the “bitmap” directly in AutoCad, but you loose all “adaptivity” to it. It’s only an image now!
Just like using a pdf reader (Acrobat reader) ??.
Can’t remember how but sometime last year, I somehow got those originals in dxf !?
I’m hopping to get those updates again in DXF !
Gerald…. ??

Guys, this may be the answer to your question here. I don't mean to put a damper on things, but the dxf files are Gerald's sweat, blood, tears and toil and I don't think he is interested in giving them away. The machine can be made quite easily from the documents he is freely giving away (ie the pdfs). Hope this helps some. And Gerald if I'm overstepping my bounds by writing this just let me know. This is not meant to be taken in any kind of mean manner just an answer to the question.

Everything can be made from the PDF files, and if you have just a little knowhow in Autocad or any other Cad program, then you should have no problem making the DXF files yourself...

I have made all part's from the pdf files, so I know this can be done...

I can understand why Gerald would not send out all his DXF files, cause ther's a lot of work behind the production of all of these... If people want to build a mechmate, then use the forum, use the pdf's, but make an effort to build it yourselves, the fun part of making a CNC machine is to figure out a lot on your own....

I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I think that many are hoping to have everything made simpel.. Gerald has made alot of it simpel by releasing his drawings free of charge, I for one are very happy for this, but I'm also putting in alot of effort to make drawings myself...

Well, goes to show you learn something new every day! I didn't know you could make dxf's from a pdf file. Guess I'll just keep on hacking away at it the best I know how :-) BTW great job so far on your machine Kim.

1. My dxf drawings have some surplus layers of junk info that will be confusing

2. My mission is to give the builders as much help and clear information as possible. I have a low interest in helping re-designers - except for things like using standard V-rails

Hi all,

Sorry, did not want to start a polemic and/or offend anyone !
I obviously need to do more research & homework.
Gerald, do I discard all previous plans I have and start fresh with what is now available from the download page ?
Thanks, Robert

JR, I have difficulty relating your comment "drawing 10 20 454 carrier plate profile cut P D. the measurment that reads 50.2118in should read 50.500in." on this part of the drawing:

Help me out please?......

Thanks Gerald,

For starters, I’ll need to double & triple check and do some cleaning on what I have ( allot from MechMate ) and then start my personal page not to confuse my need with this thread.
For now I would appreciate getting those dxf :
10 30 422 BB,
M1 20 120 AB
M1 20 121 TB
M1 20 210 TB
M1 20 220 TA
Thanks for your time on this Gerald. BTW, there is no rush for this. If I understand correctly, your on a trip somewhere, so this can wait till your back and settle !
Later, Robert :-)

Take 10 30 422 B as an example - the only purpose of that drawing is to show the bending positions/angles and I will not bother to update that drawing if a hole shape/size is changed. If you want accurate hole information, then 10 30 422 P is important, and that you have as a dxf.

I don't want to create confusion, and waste a lot of time in answering questions, by releasing drawings that contain "mistakes".

Let's make it clear, hopefully for the last time, .dxf's will not be supplied on request.

I do not have a master 3D model where each drawing sheet updates automatically - each sheet is drawn manually and independently. That's the way I personally like doing it and it allows me some artistic freedom in representing the manufacturing processes.

JR, a very good illustration of what happens when .dxf drawings are opened and analyzed by different CAD systems!
