A local joke.... Van emigrated to Australia, and the average South African IQ went up by 10 points. So did Australia's. |

http://www.cbcunlocked.com/artman/publish/article_631.shtml did you notice a VAN city was top of that list? Its really not that bad here. Most of the people I meet are quite bright , brits included. ;) I have to say though most people I have been meeting of late are , surprise , South African. You learn to avoid the ones wearing the shirt with the jumping deer. There usually grumpy, why I don't know. Cheers D VAN R |

Van wears a shirt with a "jumping deer"...he is very grumpy today. In general, the folk who emigrate (from any country) probably see more negatives in life than those who choose to stay. Here is some more about "Van" |

I'm starting to realize that my humour doesn't translate into type very well. sigh. The classic "glass half empty , half full arguement" In general folk who emmigrate probably see more positives than those who stay. Love, money , better jobs , better education, democratic government to list but a few. and as for Van, a clumsy guy ( like me ), is one who trys to help people cope with the negatives in life through his humour. |

Dick, I am the clumsy one - didn't even think that you had a van in your surname till your last post. I have often been asked seriously by Ossies and Kiwis why the South Africans are such a surly lot - now I see that you weren't on that track, if you let us win the rugby from time to time, we'll cheer up, okay? Mike, that little jumping deer is the springbok in Afrikaans or the springbuck in English.: "Amongst the animals in the Kalahari desert, the one that is perhaps the best known throughout the world, is the springbok, that elegant and graceful antelope that has given its name to South Africa' National Rugby team. The kalahari desert Springbok is perhaps the most common and popular game and hunting animal in South Africa. They seem to exude an exuberance and gaiety of spirit, that is seldom equalled in the animal kingdom, let alone the animals in the Kalahari desert. The characteristic "pronk" which can perhaps be translated as "prance" or "strut" of the springbok as they jump metres far across a bush, or just from pure exuberance, must be one of the most spectacular animal behaviours amongst the animals in the kalahari desert. Surprisingly enough, this "prancing" behaviour of the Kalahari Springbok doesn't appear to be directly related to mating. "

Personally I intend to visit and be a tourist, mind you I'll only go with a bit of hand holding . As Canadian our habit of saying "I'm so sorry but your standing on my foot" may mark us in the rough and tumble of Jo'berg or Cape Town. Besides the missing maids , a number of families have complained about education here and gone back temporarily, for their kids schooling! The Van jokes don't bother me a bit , some are even funny. Hey, they beat the heck out of Dick jokes .... |
