Hi Al,
That is a brilliant Spider alternative! Less for more! |

Arachnid alternative
Well it looks as if my alternative to the spider plate will work.
Got all the parts made and fitted today. Cost me a couple of days but its worth it if it works. Not in so much of a hurry now as I was aiming for # 110, but that has gone. However long you think it will take to do something multiply it by 3, same for cost. If I am awarded a number I will be happy with whatever it is. If anyone wants the details let me know and I will post them. Put the motor on tomorrow and see what shakes loose. Starting to look like a machine now. |

Nice solution Al
My only concern is the long extension you have on the bolts holding the v-wheels, if I am correct that is an 8mm bolt with two nuts before the wheel assemblies, maybe consider making up a bigger bush (larger diameter) to take up that space, that will reduce the flexing you will get in those bolts when adjusting the tension and tramming of the Z axis. |

Your photos do not show it but the original spider had a hard stop incorporated into the design. The stop makes sure the Z axis can not be ejected from the top of the Y Car. Ross |

Yes I will get some proper spacers made and replace the M8's with better quality.
Just working with what I had to hand for the moment. Yes I will fit a hard stop. Thanks for the comments. Hi Ho, off to work I go. |

Black hole day
I had one of those black hole days today.
Worked all day with little to show for it. Z axis motor in place. Hold down idler assembly temporary fit. Some work done on wiring. Rain around, more expected but vertical so far. |

Looks like you are making some nice progress, every little bit counts. Looking good so far!

The motor is supposed to be mounted this side of the car with that pressure roller on the back (under the cable tray connection) this is to bring the force of the motor closer to the cutting action as you will have your router/spindle mounted on the front of the Z plate.
(sorry, just re-read your post and saw that its a temporary fit ) Last edited by Alan_c; Thu 19 September 2013 at 14:28.. |

Doh !
It was just a temporary test honest Covers on and off the machine all day(Rain) Just like the tennis at Wimbledon. Axis motor wiring prepared. 1 cable tray mounted (Temporary) I did some work for a guy on my old machine a couple of months ago. He phoned today asking when the new machine will be running as he has some more work for me. I told him 2 weeks. multiply that by a factor of 3(Christmas ?). Oh well, up early again tomorrow. |

I see max. 10days work before a reliable & functional MM. but if you are talking about perfection in every aspect, 12 months... maybe longer.

Wires
Up with the birds for the last 3 days.
35 hours in the black hole. Hard stops sorted. Cable runs going in. Lots of little things done. Another early bird tomorrow |

Are you planning the flexible conduit in place of cable chains?
I'd be very curious as to whether that works or not. My gut reaction says it will give you problems, but that is just my opinion. |
#105

The conduit is an experiment, it was cheap and available
I have dxf files for cable chain. There are some things I will change when the machine runs. Not a conventional build due to many factors. Bear with me and I will get it sorted. |

Its all good. Was just an observation, not meant as a criticism.
I'm really liking your work and your machine. |

I though you are making your own shielded cable with the metal conduit.

Motors wired
No offence taken Darren.
All comments welcome. I am learning as I go along. Motors wired. Cut some plywood today but with my table saw. Applied some varnish to the sub table. I got an uninterruptiible power supply today. Been having a lot of spikes and outages lately, not doing me or my computer any good. |

A Nybble is 4 bits.

Half a byte..
Yes, half a byte is a nybble. But in a 12 or 60 bit machine it is 3 bits, not 4. CDC 6600 was 60bit. I used a CDC (forgot number) that was 48 bit single precision. PDP8 was 12 bit.
IBMesque machines (and most intel) are an 8bit multiple. Oh well, my computer history is showing. ... Next week on This Old Geek .... BTW, Al, I am really enjoying following your build! ... Enjoy Last edited by servant74; Tue 24 September 2013 at 20:09.. |

Thanks for all the bits of information.
Micro switches & E stop wired.. Tried homing, then a problem. The board maker changed something. On my old board there was a small plug for switch and e stop. On the new board there is a RS232 DB9 outlet but the small outlet is still there. As I did not have a RS232 I used the small plug from the old board. I should have known better after the motor wiring experience. Two switches Y & E stop use pin 11. Off to the shop tomorrow to find a Rs232DB9 plug or cable. |

Machine homed.
Software configured. Motors tuned. Settings saved. X & Y 6000 mm/min. Z 2500 mm/min, could run at 6000 but would be dangerous. X Travel 1200mm Y 696mm Z 187mm Waiting for a piece of plate to mount the router on. It feels like a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel exhausted but happy. |
