Gerald I'm not trying to create extra work for you, but I thought it would be cool if the date issued was added to the serial #.

Okay JR, you have just earned yourself a little task. . .
(while you are about it, how about the dates of those cutting without serial numbers? ) |

Does that mean that Greg passed on #6 (not 7) to get #13?
Thanks for the checking! (Hey, don't you guys write the day after the month? ) Our first MM (gantry + y-car) with SB table + SB z-slide . . . . . December 2005 Our second MM (no parts from SB) . . . . . February(?) 2006 Don Ross . . . . . 15 January 2007 link |

Alan got his number on 14 November. The MM can have a variety of "toolheads" . . . . a pen qualified

Gerald,
Shouldn't Don get a serial number too? |

"Does that mean that Greg passed on #6 (not 7) to get #13?"
I don't know but the reversed dates did have me going. "Thanks for the checking! (Hey, don't you guys write the day after the month? )" Yes but I used copy and paste directly from the "post" Please change Alan's to 14 November 2008 |

Heath, the serial numbers are a bit of a fun thing - they are given to machines that look finished (painted, preferably blue), carry the logo and are shown to have done something productive.

It's nice to know, that even on a globe scale, I can still "stir the pot."
It's actually number 6. |

What about the times it took to build. This will give future builders an idea what to expect.

G' you will soon need an excel sheet to input the various fields
how about google docs? |

You see how people can run away with ideas . . . all that I wanted was a list to remember which serial number was next!
But nothing stops someone else from compiling (AND MAINTAINING!) a more complicated database |

No more serial numbers?
Quote:
http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showt...21&postcount=1 The later posts in that thread then seem to go on about maybe allowing them but it doesn't seem to say for sure. So, if I complete a table, even if it's not exactly following the plans, will I be able to get a number? Thanks! -Steve |

Gerald,
I think its more a matter of pride to get a serial number assigned by the designer of the Mechmate! |

Okay, I'm volunteering to "maintain" the serial number tracking "database"
I have created a spreadsheet loaded it with the data we have so far. My proposal is that I'm just the keeper of the data. Gerald would still decide when a serial number is awarded. The Forum, with Gerald's agreement, would suggest what fields to include. Any Forum member could submit updates to the spreadsheet. I have created a Google Docs spreadsheet. For the moment it is available for anyone to view, HERE: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...WnsBc2_U5yEaQw. Gerald, is this approach okay with you? Anyone in the world can see the spreadsheet. If we want to use Google Docs and if we don't use this global access approach, I would have to keep a list of people authorized to view the data. Gerald, if you like this approach, it could be improved if you would show me how to change the above link to "here" like I see you doing all the time. Alternatively, I could maintain an Excel spreadsheet, print it to PDF and include the new version in a post to this thread, like the attached. Gerald, if you prefer this approach, perhaps it could be improved by including the PDF in-line in the post. I don't know how to do this either. You or someone else could show me. Let me know what you think. Regards, John |

That sounds okay John. Though, I would appreciate a list of all functional machines, even without serial numbers. That could be a separate list, or maybe a lighter/smaller font between the serial numbered machines?
To make hyperlinks: 1. highlight the word (drag mouse over word while holding left button down) 2. use the button 3. add the address to the URL line in the window that pops up |

Gerald,
Okay, so by: you mean that we will go with Google Docs and global access. Correct? As for: Quote:
As for formatting the "functional, non-serial numbered machines" spreadsheet entry, if you will point me to builder threads that fit this category, I'll create a new version of the spreadsheet with these entries included. Just a list of thread starters is all I need from you to get started. After I get the changes made, we can make adjustments based on your and other Forum members' input. I'm off to run some errands. It's noon here (8 PM in Cape Town). So, I probably won't have the updates until "tomorrow" for you. Regards, John |

At this forum: Personal Build Histories you see two sub-forums:
1. MechMates already cutting and 2. Project started, but not cutting yet As I explain there, personal threads will be moved from 2. to 1. once a machine moves and cuts under command. Serial#'s will be given to machines that are neatly finished (painted, preferably MM blue if you don't want to be teased ;-)) and have the MM logo applied." Therefore, the list of machines will be all those, and only those, in 1. MechMates already cutting. As for Google Docs, that doesn't worry me (I didn't open Google docs because I used the .pdf), because you can use the tools you want. All that I am interested in is that a reliable list exists in this thread. |

I agree. Getting a serial number was a big deal to me too. And I notice that the first thing most people do is ask for a serial number once their machine is running.

I have updated the spreadsheet as requested. It is available here
. This is a work in progress. Please feel free to make suggestions. I have read through the threads and picked the best dates I could find. I've put in a couple of comments just to give a flavor for what I had in mind. Please review and post a Reply or PM me to make corrections or to add data. I especially need help with the table sizes. If you don't think that's a useful column, let me know. Also, please help with comments. Note that this data is available globally for anyone to see. I have avoided full names. If there is anything of a private or sensitive nature that I've included, please let me know and tell me how you want it modified or if you want it deleted. I think this is a wonderful list. I think it is a testimate to all the hard work of the members of the MechMate Forum and honors those who have a "working" MechMate and especially highlights those who have earned a MechMate Serial Number. I'm not on the list, but I hope to be one day. Regards, John Last edited by jhiggins7; Thu 18 December 2008 at 19:52.. |

How did I miss DocTanner. Shame on me. I appologize, DocTanner. I'll fix it on the next update.
Gerald, Please help with the entries for your two machines: Quote:
How about we assign serial #0 to the second MM (no parts from SB) and not assign a serial # to the very first MM with SB table. Then the first MM with SB table would be not be shown in BOLD, but the second MM, Serial #0 would be shown in BOLD. Also, what were the start dates for these two machines? Let's not assign #0. The first serial number is #1
Both our first two machines were started around June 2005 when I ordered another set of motors from ShopBot, a BOB plus Gecko's. |

I will be getting #12..... I have to just add my logos and take a couple pictures. I have been cutting.
So don't be giving away my number...... I agree with Heath and Doug. It is a matter of pride to have a serial number. I am proud that I was able to build one of these complicated machines and that the thing cuts as well as it does is a reflection of the designer. I have shown the machine to 2 or 3 people so far and they are impressed with the machine and the fact that I built it. One couldn't believe that I would build such a machine without any business for it. So yes, I want a serial number. Thanks Gerald. |

Nils, #12 goes to the next person posting a pic of a proven finished system. Good chance it will be you, but it is not guaranteed.
