I am very familiar with this problem. Things to check because this is how I found the issues on Machine #28.

Machine type 5 x10
Columbo 2.2 KW spindle w Delta B series VFD.

- what it did....when spindle was on, the z would randomly go up and down, almost oscillate. The y car did the same randomly, but not as much.

Problem(s) found.
- improperly terminate shield on the step/direction wire from the BOB to the Gecko.
- ground issue on whole machine that required the following changes:
1) add relays to outbound button interface boxes on machine to isolate BOB from stations.
2) isolated the proximity switch circuit which was the final cause of the interferance
3) added an isolation transformer for the VFD only to keep ground issue away.

All the above where required for this machine to function properly.

Good luck with your troubleshooting.

I don't get 1) what are you refering to "outbound button interface boxes"?

3) isolation transformer is one expensive solution. Ever tried connecting RFI/EMI filter? it works for me.

Ken,
The buttons on the machine that are pause, resume (green and yellow).
These buttons, when not isolated between the J header on the BOB and the outbound buttons, induced noise to the BOB. Thus, had to isolate those hard buttons from the BOB by use of a FORM C, relay contact to resolve the closure to the BOB.

Filters didn't work - Transformer was a last resort. (and I just happened to have one sitting in the corner of the shop)
