Planning to build in Hungary - Some questions

Hi everyone,

I am an electrical engineer and IT specialist by profession who enjoys doing some woodworking in his spare time. I have been reading the US Make: magazine for about a year now where I became aware of CNC routers and building furnitures with them. I always thought that such a machine would be out of my reach until I stumbled upon some DIY CNC router projects. The MM got my attention just a week ago and I've been reading the forum since. I cannot say yet that I managed to read everything but it was enough to assess the feasibility of the project. Since my brother who lives in Hungary is equally affected by the idea, but has more time and space than me, we decided to plan building one there.

Here goes my first question: I could already find most of the parts available either in Hungary or elsewhere in Europe. What I am missing is a supplier for the laser cut and bent parts. Could someone from Europe please help me? I was able to find a company which could do it in Budapest Hungary but I would need the DXF files to ask them for a quote. I think that they would be cheaper than Western Europe.

Many thanks,
Andras

If you purchase the plans, all the drawings are there. I don't remember DXF's, but I haven't reviewed them lately.

There are suppliers all over the world. Check the "The Market Place" section. There are kits of laser cut parts available in the UK, and Portugal. I don't see any in western Europe, but there may be more. Go check it out. Also check the list of already built machines, and find someone that has built one in a nearby country (I am guessing there are some, but my memory fails at times).

Thanks for your quick reply, Jack

I was hesitating with the UK one, because of the imperial system and the one from Portugal was a one off offer by someone who cut 5 sets in 2009. I'll contact the UK vendor to see if his set is compatible with metric bolts and ask directly the builders from continental Europe.

Andras, welcome to the forum, and good luck with your build.
I've sent you a private message with some "housekeeping" tips...

Andras, I know there are more that CAN supply, but shipping and customs charges might be to much. I would suggest look for local laser cutter (or similar) that can provide the metal 'to spec'. You could also use the carrot with them that if it is reasonable cost and quality, you could provide their name and number so others in your part of the globe could have them build more. ... Just a thought. ... Best of luck!

Apologies from everyone, that I posted the same question couple of times yesterday! It was due to my inexperience with forum postings and my misunderstandings of Jack's advice to ask the European builders.

Andras, if you are going to buy the kit in uk don't worry about dimensions even there the project stay the same, so you will have the same pieces we all have.
Here in Italy I pay the kit somthing less than 350 euros ... but as jack said I think shipping and custom will be high ... I am shure you can find a service in Hungary that can cut the pieces .

Thanks again for everyone for the advices. I asked a few companies here in Hungary if they can manufacture the laser cut and bent parts and for how much. At last I found a reasonably priced provider which did a nice job for a very reasonable price (around 180.- Euros).

We also did a little research on the most common plywood and MDF board sizes and came to the conclusion that we should be able to cut boards up to 3100 x 2070 mm. Since it will result in a quite large machine size, we would like do a bolted design for the base table. Basically, we would like to separate the table into 5 parts which could be easier to transport. I am glad to receive any advise from anyone who did something similar. I attached our plans below. Somewhere in the forum I read that it would be advisable to use dowel pins in addition to the bolts.

I have that cutting capability, using M12 bolts and dowel pins for ease of relocation.

Many thanks for your quick reply, Fox. Congratulation to your already working machine. I am currently looking at your thread for inspiration. A first quick question: What is the diameter of your dowel pins and how many did you use?

4mm, one per connection plate. When the individual parts have more then 2 connection point it's all you need. I will update my thread with more pics once the machine is running like it should, have documented most steps. Right now it's kinda empty. I decided on a build first talk later approach along the way....otherwise it would still have been half finished
