Thanks Gerry, I am happy to be corrected. Please note I did not say windows software in general, I said "the windows software" meaning Mach3

What my decision came down to was a) I am cheap and b) hate Windows with a passion , the former being a definite consideration when running 2 or more machines.

From the old school, if it works don't fix it.

Tom, I have only played with the demo. Since I run parallel port and not a separate motion controller, I have not had the chance to run it yet.

Pete, you can download the Mach4 parallel port driver and run it in demo mode, but it's very limited in the number of lines of code it will run. (I think)

I think the only way to get a better price on Mach4, is to buy it in a package with a motion controller.

Mach4 is much more difficult to setup than Mach3, and it's still not finished, after 5 or so years of work. Also, most motion controllers do not have fully functional plugins yet either.

What benefits while running a router can there be with Mach4 instead Mach3 that are worth the trouble

At some point in time, no bugs and a better trajectory planner.

But there are easier to use options that offer that right now.
