wiifm's plans for building in Brisbane

Hi to everyone from Brisbane.

I recently downloaded the plans and have been reading all the Builder's threads so I can pick up as many tips as possible and create a shopping list. I must say I've got a lot to live up to if I'm to maintain the quality of MM builds in Brisbane

The electrical side of the build will be most challenging for me, so I am sure I will be asking lots of questions.

I've promised the boss I will finish a couple of projects around the house before I start this one, however I couldn't resist making one purchase

You've made a good purchase, My 'Boss' had me stop many times but if you're diligent the 'Boss' lets you slip in a little build fun. Welcome and happy building.

Dennis I have created a shopping list for electronics and steel in my build pages (MM#48) and have copied the electronics order here. Prices have probably changed a little but all the suppliers are still around.

Mech Mate Electronics Order, RS Components number and prices at September 2009

Transformer, 625VA, 2x40VDC, 223-8320, $169AUS

Diode, 35A, 1000V, 629-6358, $9.20

Capacitor, 100V, 22000uf, 381-9144, $55

Contactor Relay, 243-7410, $60.10

Disconnect Switch, 12A, 3 Pole, 433-9841, $79.70

Steel Wall Case, 500mmx 400mmx 200mm, 207-7333 $233
(a slightly bigger case would be better)

Chassis plate for Case, 207-7478, $34.30

Belden CY type Cable, 4G, 1mm, 50m roll, 628-2264, $172
(This cable is a fair bit cheaper than the Lapp brand)

Cable Chain, Igus 62.5mm x 39mm, 75R, 236-4946, $57.80 pm x 3

Bootlace Furrule Kit, 513-2540, $24.20

Printer Cable extension, 6m, 480-557, $10.40

Crimp Connectors, 240V Spade, 534-351, $36 per 100

PMDX-122 Breakout Board from Practical Micro. with shipping, $116

Stepper Motors 4 of, and 4 Drivers from Motion King, with shipping, $967.08

The Crucial Bootlace Furrule Crimper (rachet type) I purchased at Altronics for about $50.

Hi Jude,

Wow thanks for the list!

I haven't done enough reading yet. I've got to admit, I've struggled just to do the calculations for the transformer given the motors I am purchasing.

I am considering going with the PMDX 126 BOB and the PMDX 134 board with Gecko 203v drivers and an Ethernet Smoothstepper.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Motors arrived

So the motors arrived today.

Is anyone able to tell me how to test the motors? I have a multimeter, so am able to measure... just don't know what it is I should be measuring

We'll need a little more information before being able to help you test your motors. Are they hooked up to the stepper drivers? Are the stepper drivers connected to the power supply and to the PMDX breakout board? Do you have Mach 3 installed?

Dennis, assuming you have 4 wire motors, just take two motors and wire them to each other, matching the lead colors. Then turn the shaft of one, and watch the shaft of the other turn to match. You'll have reinvented early bridge to engine room signalling.

Beyond that, you'll want to wait until you have drivers to test with.

If they are six or eight wire motors, it's a little more complicated; you need to figure out which four wires to use.

In all probability, there's nothing to test though. Modern steppers are pretty reliable beasts.

The PK299-45A motors are 8 wire. I was hoping there might be a method to measure resistance between pairs to discover if anything is not right. Looks like I will just have to wait until I get the bits together for the kitchen table project.

See here: http://catalog.orientalmotor.com/bro...&assetid=26061

You should see the same resistance on each of the four windings. Choose an A phase and a B phase winding to get the four wires to do the back-to-back test above. Then use the other set of four wires to test the other half of the motor windings.

Sean, always a pleasure to bump into you. Hope all is well down there.

One last note on testing the motors: if you short circuit a winding, you'll feel the resistance when you try to spin the shaft. This is both a good quick test of the windings, and a way to confirm or sort out which wires are on the same winding if you have no measuring tool or wiring diagram available.

Hi Brad and Sean,

Thanks for your help! I measured resistance across pairs and all matched. I was also able to detect voltage across pairs when the shaft was turned by hand.

Hi Dennis

Brad and Sean know their stuff, good names to remember if one was to think about building a CNC machine

Welcome to the Mechmate forum.
Read as extensively as you can.
This site puts the whole CNC journey together in such a way that you can grow along with the project.

Good luck

Just a quick update. I've been accumulating bits and pieces. Laser cut parts from Rick (rnixon) have arrived I am planning to do the same belt reduction as Metalhead, so purchased the extra plates. Not sure how it will work on the Z axis. More contemplation required.

The postman has been busy over the past few weeks.

Pulling this thread from the depths

So most of the steel for the main assembly arrived this week along with steel for another job I am doing.

Knocked up a small cutting bench for the cold cut saw with a couple of roller stands and will start cutting now.

As you can see, there is not much room in the shed at the moment, but I hope to rectify that situation over the next couple of weeks.

A few more electrical parts arrived in the past week or so, so I decided to start my own version of the 'kitchen bench' project.

Part of that was just figuring out the decisions I had made in some of my purchases at the beginning.

For my own records:
After going through the CalculatedPowerSupply spreadsheet and the PK299-F4.5A stepper motor specs, combined with the power supply I have in front of me (Antek Industries PS8N63N24R5), it looks like I decided to wire the motors in Bi-Polar Parallel.

I have the mains latching circuit working and powering the power supply. Now time to connect the PMDX126

Well after some confusion, a lot of reading and a few trials and tribulations, I have the stepper motors turning with Mach4, ESS, PMDX 126, PMDX 134.

In the beginning, I had a faulty cable between the 126 and the 134, but in the process I discovered I had 4Ohm resistors instead of 40kOhm resistors for the Geckos.

I feel happy now that I have the basics sorted and can add features as I go from here.

So you had a bad 25 pin ribbon cable between your 126 and 134 board? Did this cable come from PMDX with your parts? If so I want to let them know they may see others since Davey also had this issue.
