You are not kidding... sweet!

With something that nice, was it cheaper than purchasing the geared steppers from OM?

Thanks everyone. We designed it so it works with the existing motor mounts therefore it works on all axis without any modifications. The picture is for Sean, it's a vertical mill attachment for my atlas lathe.

"Done! Setting up dust foot & table top"

........seems to be in the distant past already.

jr. I thought you might have that attachment. I knew you had a lathe, but never heard mention of the mill. Bravo. By the way, I have the same wixey incline gauge, I couldn't live without now that I own it.

Thanks guys! I can tell you this...

When I look at the work and 15 odd cuts in MDF to get it how we like it, I am more and more impressed with Gerald getting this whole machine designed.

Regarding the question of cheaper than buying geared motors... Hmmm. Probably not on a one-off basis. But, JR had the motors and wanted to use them.

In the end, this might work out better because of the ability to adjust resolution to suit one's needs by varying the ratios possible in the belt drive.

I am certainly no expert and until they have been cutting for a while, it is too soon to tell. Even though we designed it, Gerald is much more qualified to comment.

It still is simply toooo cool to draw something and then see the Mechmate cut it EXACTLY. I am sure that I will eventually get used to it but right now it is very exciting.

Thanks again Gerald!

Robert,

The drive pulley is 15 tooth and the driven pulley is 45. They came from SDP-SI as did the belts. The belt width is .375 and the pitch of the components is .200.

If you need anything else, just ask.

Marc,
Can you put in the drawing for these with bearing mounts and the bearings you used on these. Think G can make this a standard option for people who want to go on with a reduction belt drive. also the SDP-SI part numbers.

Or is it very soon to ask for?

I love the enthusiasm here. (Gerald, I now feel a tiny, tiny bit of what motivates you.) However, before we publish anything, let us try it out first. It might look really nice and yet not perform at all. Hopefully not!

You & JR, Fabio & others have convince me it’s the way to go !
Great forum & place to be. Looking forward to share at my turn some of my future built !

Oh... By the way. The engraving says www.cnc-nc.com. We built the website in preparation of actually finding ways to make money with this CNC thing. As we get further (and test the belt drives) we might put completed transmissions for sale there for those that don't feel up to cutting 1/2" aluminum on their machines.

We will post the DXFs for personal use for all you adventurous folk as soon as we know they are right.

Marc and J.R.

Thanks Gerald.

And for all those who have, in the past, asked about cutting aluminum. Even a direct drive machine will do it if you are patient!. As soon as the transmissions are installed, we will cut a second set and surely report on the difference.

Oh and for David. I obviously like the collaboration thing. We each bring different strengths to the party. That is what makes this so great! I couldn't do any of this without you guys and I am sincerely grateful. I love pictures.

Those serious challenges came from an unexpected quarter, but you pulled through and lived up to your promises. Well done JR, and thank you very much for being an inspiration to the rest of us.

The transmissions work great it makes all the difference in the world, in speed and the way it cuts. Here they are on the MechMate.

JR,
Stunning achievement. It would appear that you used the MM to machine the aluminum gearbox plates. Just another point to prove to all the others that aluminum is just fine on the MM. I have had no problems cutting 3/8" plate with the correct bits and feed rates.

You will notice the biggest changes in cut quality on plastic.

Keep up the great work....
Sean
