Grills Finished and Installed
The grill in this picture are cut from .25" Alder plywood. The grill bars are .5" and the holes are .5" squares. I cut the material and my cabinet client finishes them.

Do you cut both front and back on the diagonal? One sheet of ply, how many layers?

Besser,
The grill is one piece that is .25" thick. It looks like two pieces but it is one. |

Here is a picture of the grill before it was finished.

Nice work Nils! What did you use for bits, feed rates etc?

I think the pic above is from the back of the grille?

Cut diagonal slots then cut individual square holes with tiny bit, from the same side?

Did the finisher draw pencil or ink lines to trick the eye into seeing depth that doesn't exist?

Brad is correct. That is how my cabinet guy did it.
Just with the pencil line it looked great but with the finish and glaze it turned out better. Next time I will use an engraving bit and run it along the holes to take the place of the pencil marks. The bare wood is the same of both sides but they don't look like the same grill. I was amazed also. |

I think Hennie was working on something like this as well, but I think he will cut one diagonal from one side, then flip it over and cut the other diagonal from the other side. This way the HOLES will happen by themselves...just cut deep enough.

kOBUS,
That was my point, 1/4 board may need a 3/16" diagonal cut on each side to converge and produce the perforations. Depending of the number of lamination the finish will vary, Naturally you want the cut centers converging withing the same lamination instead of a boundary. I love the effect.... I'm thing of seat bases. |

Nils, I have to say, that is really, really neat. It achieves the look, and at the same time, provides a grill that is much easier to clean. Hard to argue with it.
