Choosing my motors & power supply
I pulled my back out Sat morning so I decided to break from my build and decide on my motors and power supply.
I'm looking at the O. M. PK299-F4.5A steppers wired Unipolar half coil (4.5A/phase, 2.5 mH), the Antek PS-10N50R5R12 power supply (50 volts /20A, 12 volts /1A, 5 volts /1A). For my BOB: PMDX 126 w/PMDX 134 and the drives: Gekco G2036V. I will be building 3.0:1 belt gear boxes and using a 20 tooth pinion gear. I have no clue if I'm in the right ball park on my selections so feel free to comment and give suggestions. (My other CNC router is home made w/Hobby CNC controller which I purchased as a complete kit. It runs great but this is a lot bigger scale.). |

Gary, your choices look reasonable; the power supply is probably a little oversized at 1000VA ; 500VA is likely more than sufficient.
If you just want steppers without gearboxes, you might look into other suppliers. There are no alternative sources for the steppers with gearboxes, but without, there are many, and you could save a little $. |

5N48R12 Look at these two. I have them in stock but also had the tested and they work well together. Also the price point for the OM's is going to be twice (or close to it) the price of some of these other motors. Especially since your going belt drive. You can source this your self also, but I agree with Brad the PS size is overkill. Actually even on the 5N as many are using 300VA Transformers with no issues. |
