ALL VFD with that can supply 3 phase power to the spindle are suitable.
Suitable should also include what power you have at your location... "Best" should also include, after sales service, availability, ease of operation .... etc... |

Do not mix any aluminum with you copper/brass radiator loop. It will over time cause the system to corrode!
Trust me on this. I have seen it many times. Dennis Quote:

In a closed cooling system, were the liquid coolant is closed inside the system, the coolant can be chemically treated so that it does not cause corrosion between copper and aluminium. A mix of these metals is common in engines, and that is why engines have "anti-freeze" in the water. . . . it is also the anti-corrosive chemical.

hi gerald in case of my choice XSPC 500 Passive Aluminium Reservoir - Blue http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=22695
is it okay to use it with an anti-corrosive chemical like these ones http://www.koolance.com/water-coolin...t.php?cPath=58 |

I would not trust those chemicals in my car's engine!

Unless your Chinese spindle has some aluminum parts in it stay away from that reservoir. Better to use an acrylic one. When it comes to computer water cooling parts I have had some experience.

so dennis i have to change to aluminum radiator like this one http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=25673 and make the whole system goes for aluminum and use your acrylic reservoir's suggestion. okay what about the nozzles they are nickel-plated brass do i still in
jeopardy of corrosion thanks for patience |

hi gerald regarding this thread http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showt...82&postcount=5 the fittings shown there are brass so will this affect the body of the spindle on the long run

If the Chinese spindle does not have aluminum parts don't change anything except the reservoir.

Hi Myousry.
I have used this reservoir in my setup. I was also concerned about the aluminum fins in the reservoir tank but i did some research about metal corrosion and as Gerald stated above the mix of aluminum and copper is very common in engines. The key factor is the liqiud coolant which must have anti-corrosive chemicals in it. It's better to stay out of computer liquid coolants as they don't seem to meet this requirements. My friend is an enginneer and what he reassured me was that the corrosion factor in a cooling system it's NOT the mix of metals but the liquid. Typical straight ethylene glycol antifreeze doesn't react well with the materials in your cooling system and can eat away at the metal, rubber, and plastic components. Hope i've helped you. Sergio |

I would use the same stuff that is needed for the modern car engine. Look in the instruction book for your car.

I think you guys are talking about galvanic corrosion, wiki
The corrossion will accelerate if there are stray cureent flowing withing the system, the boat guys will know this better then I do. The root solution is to use a zinc sacrificial anode (ensure it is electrical direct contact with the bare material of the cooler) , all other part that are in contact with the coolant (electrolyte) will last from galvanic corrosion for years to come. With or without the anode, it is always beneficial to use auto anti-freeze... neat or diluted... |

Ken
You are correct. We use zinc in the boats to prevent from galvanic corrosion BUT only because salt water doesn't have any anti-corrosive chems. Galvanic corrosion results when two dissimilar metals, like aluminum and stainless steel, in close proximity to each other are immersed in water with enough impurities to act as an electrolyte. When this occurs, one of the metals acts like the cathode on a battery and remains intact while the other acts like the battery's anode and corrodes In a closed cooling circuit with no oxygenation and a correct antifreeze dilution the corrosion is almost zero. |

Sergio, I guess your boat has MTU engines? When I was in the navy, responsible for some MTU's, their specification was for special oil to be mixed with the coolant water (1.5% oil). Today they have an on-line document that describes these things.
I would only use zinc blocks if I could not treat the liquid. |

Back Again after dry dock works in the boat which kept me busy.
@Gerald. No Gerald we have M.A.N engines but the principles stay the same and we too use a special oil mixture in our coolant water. It couldn't be more coincidence than that so i'm posting some photos of the boat's keel while at dry dock operations. Here is a picture while the boat is being lifted. You can see the algae & mussels built up on boat's keel. And during the travel to our drydock place. Note the corrosion in the propeller's Zinc and in the aft's zinc plates just above the flaps and the aft thruster. In this boat we have also an active anti corrosion system (Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) which use anodes connected to a DC power source in the thruster area. Polishing the props All boat primered And finally new antifouling paint and new zinc. |
