Sounds like a plan to me, spend nothing first and if it works great you have saved more beer money. That's why I'm still using our 24T.

I'm no expert on this but we are using the 24T on a 4:1 so I would guess the 20T would be better, but I remember somewhere the guys talking about having to small a pinion doesn't give enough teeth...

Just checked we paid $15.50 including so about the same price. We got 24T from memory ran direct drive for a while.
On a side note, we use a 2.4mm straight bit to cut 3mm MDF nicely.

Good for test cut but I forgot to check the width of the cut outs versus the thickness board despite the file being called "12mm layout" the cut outs weren't so we couldn't assemble ours..

Your not alone, we couldn't work out why the cuts looked like S**T and why it made some much noise. Changed the wires and got it turning the right way, works so much better :)
