1.) The rack is not perfectly parallel to the rail. As the car moves along the rail & rack the pinion must move up and down a little bit. The motor slides inside the plastic for this small movement....

The motors' detent torque keeps them in sync...

The motors' detent torque keeps them in sync while the motors are shut down. We don't normally zero the machine at startup, unless we suspect that someone has bumped it out of square.
