A size 17 motor is just over 1-inch in width. It's the size motor used in many old floppy drives in computers. It had enough torque to move the "head" on the floppy drive.

A size 34 motor is about 3-1/3 inches in width. It has sufficient torque to move several computers, not just the head of the floppy drive.

Right now, I can't think of an application on a CNC machine where the size 17 motor would be the best choice. Moving a pen in the Z direction might be such an application.

Sure you can put a NEMA17 motor on mechmate. I recommend you hang it over the Z-axis as a counter-weight to replace the gas spring. You would need at least 17 pieces for the job.
Its also handy as a paper weight.
