Progress on my Lathe project #23 - Plettenberg Bay, S.Africa
Hi ALL
I have started building my MM as I got jealous looking at the progress of other builds in progress and as someone once told me , start pulling finger and start building so let the adventure begins. Gerald thanks once again for the plans.I started last night with welding the y-car together and it all just clipped together ,made life easy.I will try to post a photo later during the day. |
Welcome to the forum hennie....
We are looking forward to seeing lot's of pictures as your build progresses... |
Go for it Hennie!

First Pic`s

Figured out how to resize so here are the first ones of the y-car welded and an attempt at fitting the base of my reduction gearbox to the motor plate.
I must still drill the four holes to attach the plate and do some work on it. |

This is my first attempt at fitting my reduction gearbox base plate onto the motor mounting plate.Still need to do some work on it but the idea is there.

Hi Hennie,
Glad you got started..at least I am still a little ahead. Good luck.:D |
Goed gedaan Hennie, and what do you mean Kobus that you are little ahead, you are almost finished :)
|
Its a thing between us.
Had all my electrical parts ordered by a local shop and got a good deal even on the cables ( lapp ). |
Did you get the Lapp cables from the guys in Cape Town or were you able to source them locally? what sort of prices did you pay?
|
From the guys in Cape Town through the electrical supply shop.Apparently they moved . Phone them they might have some off cuts that they want to get rid of!

Hi ALL
GERALD, I have not cut the main beams for my machine. The question that I need to ask is at what length do one need to start supporting the beams in the centre as although we cut a lot of 2750x1830 sheets on the table saw and that won`t be a problem for th MM one need that did pop up for my workshop is that we make a lot of solid wooden tops and while I am at an early stage of my built I might just as well order an extra beam and make the length of the table to accommodate a 3500 mm top, width on the other hand would not be a problem. Please help? |
At about 3.6m [12ft], I would add more legs, or increase the strength of the beams.
|
The table should in total length be +/- 4 meters long and if legs be added they must be where the vertical bearers are? That is my thought.
|
That would be a nice logical place - ie add 4 small legs.

Gerald as you can see I have a small 15 t t5 timing pulley and a 60 t t5 .
as shown there is not much meat left once 14 mm has been drilled. |
Hi Alan,
Got my cables and electrical box with all the switches ,relays. Lapp cables for the build as per what Gerald used on his machine was R 419.00 excl. vat.I don`t know if that is reasonable. |
15t Pulleys
H Hennie,
I have used the 15t successfully many times on 1/2" shafts, you might consider going to a 17/18t pulley perhaps. Drill for two M3 grub screws in the root of a tooth and you will be fine. A drop of the low strength loctite will stop them from coming loose. Cheers, Greg:cool: |
Hi Greg,
Will do that. Can you please mail me your wiring diagram again I have deleted the one you sent me.I have started putting my control box together.I would like to know on the bob which contact points I need to use for my proxy switches and which I can use for my router or anyone that can help. Kobus how are you doing on your box as you are further then me? |

How do your cable specs compare to my list? |
Alan when did you get your quote? I did notice that I do short 4 core x .5mm about 30 meters.I am also increasing the length of my table so I will have to order some more.I am gong to attach the box to my table so I don`t need to run cable from lets say if the box was mounted on the wall.
|
Hi Hennie, update on my build will be in my thread later. That price for box, cables, switches sound very cheap...exactly what did you get...give us a list.
|
Hi Kobus
Total price incl. cable (box, switches, the works)R 2218.60 ( will post pic`s on what I got and what I did this past weekend) |
After our telephone conversation.
On the Mach3 BOB the following: The numbers on the PC board is basically the PORT number. If you look at the drawing of Greg, the last 4 blocks on the top right hand is where I connected my 4 Gecko's. If you use G202's then the +5V of the BOB connects to the Gecko COM. The first Gecko DIR-ection will connect to Pin 2 of the BOB The first Gecko Step will connect to Pin 3 of the BOB. In MACH 3 you go and configure the ports accordingly The same for the other 3. You connect the wires to the pin number on the BOB, and go and configure that number on MACH3....easy:D |
MOE..E DANKIE!:)
Ek het dit so gedoen. |
Gerald
Would it be a problem if I use 20x20 mm sq bar for my x/y stopper blocks? (have 12 meters lying in my way). I have decided on the length of the table.I would first cut a piece of 2250 mm for a cross bearer out of the 180x70 channel .This will then become the first one on the end of the table and so also for the last one this still gives me a table of 3750 mm.This would be more sturdy on the side that one load the material as some boards are quite heavy and not easy to handle.I usually see the oaks in my w/shop battle when they cut a big board or top on the table saw.( would love to do 4 meters but space becomes an issue.) |
You may have to chamfer the top of the stopper block to miss:
- The V-wheels (x+y axis)and their bolts as they pass - The underside of the y-car's 2mm plate skirt .......but I doubt it. |
