At Last, It's time to begin

Hi All,
I am an IT engineer working for a telecom in my country Cameroon in Central Africa. Indeed it is a pleasure for me to be part of this community. I have been around this forum for more than 10 years. I have read and read and read through this forum. Even though have have never build or used a CNC machine before, I feel confident that with the help and support from friends of this forum I will build a MechMate. I have bought 80 percent of what is needed so far.
********
the foot print of my machine is going to be 3300 x 2200.
It will run on Acorn boards and teknic motors. I purchased the laser cut parts already from Mike (Metal Head).
I will also mount a 4th axis according to the design of x-ray dude

All metal for the base frame has been bought.

I hope to post some pictures and give more details.

I count on the support and criticism of all. I am open to learn from those who have gone ahead and hope this will be another fun ride.

Vustasmith,

Great. Looks like you are on your way.

MarkRH Fri 18 October 2019 04:30

Nice, a build with teknic
I only remember seeing 1 who upgraded to teknic and they are nema 23, im sure many will watch with interest.

Fantastic, Vustamsith. Great to see your build starting. Looking forward to your progress.

Please post often. I want to see this control box come together.

vustasmith Fri 25 October 2019 02:01

Hi Mike,
I will post as often as possible. At the moment, due to daily work and time constrain my progress is slow. My plan is to first start with the steel assembly since it is the most challenging aspect for me.

Panovak Thu 09 January 2020 07:25

How is your project coming along? I'll be using a acorn as well and deciding on clearpath or dyn /dmm

vustasmith Sat 11 January 2020 16:16

Hello Paul, not much progress has been made so far.
I have cut the steel to dimension and also drilled where necessary. My welder machine is faulty, I hope to repair it And then start welding the steel base. Sure I will upload some photos when the table takes shape.

Panovak Mon 10 February 2020 08:05

Will you be doing gear reduction with those servos?

vustasmith Wed 12 February 2020 14:03

Hi Paul, Yes i will be having 4:1 reduction, which I bought them from Mike (Metal Head). During once of my exchange with Mike Richards he advised on getting a belt reduction unit

See this link: http://mechmate.com/forums/showthrea...1&postcount=18

Panovak Wed 12 February 2020 14:48

Didn't realize he sold those. I have another question. I will be using acorn controls and want a 4th axis but I had read that it only controls 4 motors. 2 for x, 1 for y and 1 for z. How will you control the 4th axis?
Thanks

vustasmith Tue 18 February 2020 15:19

Hi Paul,
I will do hardware pairing for the X and X'.
See this link on the centroid website
https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid...ontroller.html
Read the pdf document concerning Acorn axis pairing and auto squaring.
You can find the information just after the videos.
Please read through the document and if there is something you don't understand, I will be glad to help.

vustasmith Tue 18 February 2020 15:24

Hi Paul,
Mike (metal head) can provide you with almost all the components for the mechmate except the frame. Just give him a pm and he will be of great help. The quality of his components are just excellent. He is a nice person, ask as many questions as possible concerning your needs

I have been working on the base frame. I have been cutting and notching some round tubes. Also bought a welder. Looking forward to start welding the table.

spyderxxx Sat 08 August 2020 05:37

If those round tubes are galvanized be very careful when welding. The off gases can kill you.
Ed

vustasmith Sat 08 August 2020 14:47

Thanks Ed for the concern. I plan to weld these tubes outside of the shop and also use a fan to blow away the case from me during the welding. By default I will be wearing a respiratory mask. But if someone has any professional advice for me on how to go about welding the galvanised steel, I will much appreciate your advice. Hey just to let you know that I will drink lots of milk during the process:D

vustasmith Thu 03 February 2022 11:15

it's been a long time that I have not updated on the forum the progress of the work. So far the table base, the gantry and the Y car are all done. The entire machine has been dismantled and painted. I am looking forward to reassemble the machine over the weekend.
I will put up pictures once this has been done

I am currently in the process of aligning the rais of the x axis

Dear Mechmate family, I will like to share my progress with you all. The mechmate cnc is alive. More to be done to fine tune it. But it cuts check out the link
