here is what we did with the jali shapes - its a pulpit for a mosque . yet to receive polishing - will have a matt finish.

KenC Fri 22 January 2010 22:32

Beautiful!

Kobus_Joubert Fri 22 January 2010 22:37

Magic, but I still want to know how to make that WHITE stuff. If it is a trade secret so be it....but PM me then:D

javeria Sat 23 January 2010 01:14

its called white metal paste here and gets mixed with a hardner (gp resin+chalk powder)d

KenC Sat 23 January 2010 01:16

Irfan, what is the purpose of the paste? Would you show us the finished?

javeria Sat 23 January 2010 01:17

the paste is the white color you look as a inlay in the v carving on the jali

KenC Sat 23 January 2010 01:34

Interesting, does it contain metal? or it is how they are commonly known as?

digger Sat 23 January 2010 06:36

Some interesting reading regarding inlays:

KenC Sat 23 January 2010 20:02

Thanks Milosh. Its really interesting read. I can see modern tech slowly creeps into wood working procedure.

student1616 Sun 24 January 2010 20:17

good work.
whats the tool u used for this work.imean carbide or MS and its size and type(engraving tip or endmill).
and the site u posted before craftsmanspace.com providing Autocad drawing.how did u convert that in to Gcode.

sailfl Mon 25 January 2010 03:09

GCode is convert with the use of a CAM software program.

student1616 Mon 25 January 2010 09:37

program like....?
i know mastercam.but its bit difficult to operate.is there any tool which is for hobby ppl level with good features

some more of jali work

some more of the jali work, this time on 30 mm thick mdf, sure the cutting bit makes a racket now!

G' how deep can you drive a 6mm 2 flute endmill in mdf and at what feed rate? i am currently going with 6mm deep per pass at around 2500mm/min

javeria Fri 05 February 2010 09:29

4th axis

and here is what I have to build my 4th axis attachment :)

Gerald D Fri 05 February 2010 10:59

Irfan, I think my son would do 4 passes to get through 30mm MDF with a 6mm bit. The speed for that job sounds about right.

On doing 4 passes, the trick is to do the 4th (last) pass with a slightly smaller offset, so that it cleans the marks left by the previous passes. Some guys do the first passes climb cut direction and the last pass conventional to get the same clean-up effect.

Claudiu Fri 05 February 2010 12:31

Irfan, what is your cv setting in mach? why don`t you get rounded corners at that beautyful jali work? Please tell me your secret...thanks for the mail.

student1616 Fri 05 February 2010 20:59

still waiting for your reply reading the type of G-code generation program you guys use.
iam quite impressed with the work done on the MDF.

Kobus_Joubert Fri 05 February 2010 21:35

Looks like that 4th axis is on it's way.

KenC Fri 05 February 2010 22:46

How would you handle the potential backlash?

Kobus_Joubert Sat 06 February 2010 01:10

To me backlash is like a gost. I hear about it, but do not experiece it. Why worry about something if it is a potential hazard ? With the2 gears pulled against each other with a spring, will there be a backlash problem ?

KenC Sat 06 February 2010 01:37

IMHO, Backlash is not a ghost, it is an inevitable occurrence which will comes with wear & tear of mating surfaces. AFAIK, Even with correct design compensation, they will catch up eventually. I'm just hopping it the occurrence will not be too frequent ;)

I do hope the spring loaded gear meshing like what MM is having will work on rotary spur gears as well, I do see good reason why it should work. There will be a huge advantage in Gear Ratio to Size advantage. Not to mention cost saving as spur gears are the cheapest of all gear form.

Will follow this development with acute interest.

javeria Sat 06 February 2010 10:26

Kobus gave me the guts to go in for the arrangement- whats wrong in trying - afterall we have it everywhere on the mechmate, its only straight on the others and here its round (the rack)

:)

Besser Sun 07 February 2010 18:58

Yes spring loaded is the simple and effective anti backlash method. Getting fancy can mean headaches

See Toyota's pedal jam . . . . . for the side-conversation
