Cutting and Making Dust! #40 - California, USA

4 Attachment(s)
All the table steel arrived last week, so I took a 3 day weekend and got the MM table welded up. I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

The MM plans are WELL DONE and very easy to read and follow. Thanks to Gerald for all his hard work!

I did add some extra rails across the bottom support tubes on the table. This should make a good place to store plywood sheets.

Next up Rails and Gantry - this is FUN stuff.

Regards,
Mike

Beautiful work Mike. Good luck with your build.

OK, a little more progress. Rails finished, gantry and Y car rolling. Gotta love those DIY rails, with a little work you can make them perfect.

Up next, the Z axis and motors. I've got my eye on one of those coveted Serial Numbers ;-).

This forum is awesome, thanks to everyone, especially Gerald!

Nice work Mike.
Where did you find all those nice, flexible rubber grommets!?
Detail - nice details.

Nice job Mike!

Hope you have considered the hold-down roller for the y-car when you positioned this cable hole:

. . . . and that there might be thicker cables/pipes for spindle and compressed air.

Mike,
Your progress is looking good.

Mike: Lovely work. Can you tell me the best way you found to put the holes in the main beams? Just a drill press or...? Also, how did you turn the beast over? Overhead slings?

I am just starting on welding up the table but want to get the holes in before the welding.

Thanks

Joe in Washington State

Hi Joe,

I drilled the rails on a drill press first with 1/4" holes. Once I had a rolling gantry, I C/G-clamped the rails on the main beams. With the rails in the right place I used a hand drill to follow those rail holes through the main beams (1/4"). The rails came back off and I used a drill press to put 3/8" holes in the rails and a hand drill to put the 1/2" holes in the main rails. I used pretty much the same process for the Y-rails.

Tip: for those pesky clamping rails that go inside the Y tubes.
1. Get yourself 2 - 6" x 5/16" bolts.
2. After all the Y rail drilling is finished, put the clamp-rails inside the Y-tubes.
3. Put the Y-rails on the Y-tubes.
4. Use these 6" bolts on either end of rail and thread a couple turns into the Clamp rails.
5. Use these bolts to lift up the clamp rails and add the rest of the shorter 5/16" bolts. (use a helper, or a vice-grip pliers to hold the clamp rail up)

lol, I did think about that one for a while! I ended up using a engine hoist on one side. Tipped beasty onto one side, moved the hoist to the other side, then lowered it upright. It worked really well, but do it carefully.

Thanks. That is all very helpful. I think I can handle all of that now. Again, great looking job on you machine. Can't wait to see it finished.

Almost ready to make some dust!

It moves! The gantry is moving X,Y,Z quite nicely with Mach3. I still have some details to work out with hooking up the router on/off and speed and the limit stops, but I should be making dust soon. Attached are a few more pics.

Oh, and that MechMate logo needs to be installed before the first cut!

Thanks to all!

Mike: Great photos. Thanks. Do you have the source and item #'s for the control switches? Also, what is the control box (showing 00000) in the photo in the upper right corner - the one over the power supply? Joe

Hi Mike, I am using same set-up as yours as far as tollhead is concerned. Can you post your PD settings? I just wanna make sure I am doing things right.

Joe, looks like a VFD for his spindle.

What is the LCD screen to the right of your WEG On/Off button? Voltmeter/temperature meter?

Let me see if I can answer the Q's that came up:

Yes, cncb is correct the 00000 thing is the VFD for the spindle. I'm using the Water Cooled Spindle from eBay. See:

I used the PD setting that came with the instruction sheet for the VFD. See attached below.

Its a temperature meter that monitors the spindle water temp, see: http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-fl...wmeter-wi.html

Thanks to everyone here, especially Gerald for making such a great DIY machine and sharing it with the world. I'm happy to say my MM is cutting nicely! I still have a few bugs to work out, but like any DIY project, things are never totally "finished". See the pic below, and for those that want to see the movie, check out:

Gerald, did I earn my coveted Serial Number?

Thanks Again,
Mike

Thanks!
