Re-joining the group, finally started my build.

Hi everyone, my name is Mark, I joined the forum and started planning way back in 2006 , ordered all the steel and laser cut parts (from Donald) and all the electronics in early 2007. I cut all the steel to size and did some of the machining and then life got in the way and everything just sat in the corner of the shop.

I found my old cell phone that I used at the time to take pictures and I will post some of them later (I know we all love pictures). My machine is a standard 49"x97" cutting area but I took a different approach and cut some of the longer parts in half so I could machine them on my machining center and then weld them back together.

I am a tool & die maker by trade and I am " electronically challenged" so I'm sure I will be asking for help in that area of the build. Just curious if there is someone in the metro Detroit area that has a Mechate up and running.I'm not very fast with the keyboard so I will add more later.

Thank you darren, I see there is a lot of new information, the last time I spent a considerable amount of time here was when the MAMBA version was being developed. Here are some pictures from when the steel arrived and some of the cutting and machining.

Oh great..... I think I just lost the title of "Most Prolonged Build"

SEIKI Sun 23 February 2014 11:49

I never intended for it to take this long but between work and kids it's just a matter of priorities . I will say it sure feels good to be working on it. Hopefully you will find the time or motivation and get your build completed .

Made some progress this weekend and finished all the stop blocks

smreish Sun 23 February 2014 16:25

those are pretty :)

Tom Ayres Sun 23 February 2014 18:42

They look milled...nice

SEIKI Mon 24 February 2014 07:02

Thanks... I cnc machined them from solid blocks then hit then in the glass beader to remove some of the tool marks. I will try and post more pictures of my build but i need to re-size them first. The only thing i have left to do as far as making parts go are the z axis components.

A little progress on the z axis... Still need to mill the angles.

Are you missing a hole for the rack near the middle of the grouping? or am I incorrect?

SEIKI Wed 26 February 2014 17:35

Tom, I will have to check out the drawings for the rack and do some comparison. My drawings were downloaded in 2006 so I guess it's possible that there were some errors in the early drawings and I have outdated drawings. I am aware that there were so spacing discrepancy between metric and inch dimensions but other than that the z slide matches the drawing I have.

Tom Ayres Thu 27 February 2014 02:46

Is that the 10" or the 14" slide? I believe the 10" only has 2 and the 14" has 3 holding it together if I remember correctly, I don't have my plans near. Otherwise it looks great. I'm doing my hard stop blocks right now but they definitely won't look as good as yours do, they are the last thing to do before I fire this thing up for the first time, wish me luck.

lonestaral Thu 27 February 2014 04:22

It looks like the 18 inch gauge plate.
One hole for the rack is in the wrong position.
The uppermost set of 3 holes should be correct.
The lower rack hole should be 200mm down or to the left looking at the photo.
Hope this helps.

darren salyer Thu 27 February 2014 05:28

Tom, I've still never installed my stop blocks....
I think its a good idea you have of totally finishing before the first cut.
Once the fun starts, its hard to go back.

I'll get to them.....eventually.;)

Tom Ayres Thu 27 February 2014 06:11

Isn't that sorta cheating? Ha ha

Tom Ayres Thu 27 February 2014 06:12

By the way I don't trust myself enough to do without them.

SEIKI Thu 27 February 2014 08:56

First of all Tom congratulations on getting to where you are and hope you get your stop blocks completed soon. I don't think i would be brave enough to run without them, and don't worry about them looking pretty as long as they are functional is all that counts. Unfortunately I'm kinda anal about things like this and can't seem to let it go,my wife calls it a "sickness".

My drawing 10 40 330 DA dated Nov. 20 2006 has the spacing for the rack screw holes at 120 mm (4.7"). I am assuming this is a 10" Z as the plate itself is 18" long.

My drawing M2 10 120 DA (Z rack ) dated Nov. 21 2006 also has the spacing of the screw holes at 120 mm (4.7").

20 minutes later. Just need to stone the machine marks out.

SEIKI Sun 09 March 2014 10:16

Sean, I did check all the diagonal dimensions and everything is square. I machined and ground flat, square and parallel the main X channels and all the cross support channels then I precision bored 1/2" locating dowel holes. My table is partially bolt together so I could disassemble it for moving if necessary,so having the dowel pins would greatly aid the reassembly process. Not that I plan on moving it, but you never know.

A little more progress, I made my router mount the other day. It came out pretty good but i might re make the base that attaches to the z slide to bring it down lower to the table, I'll have to see when i get the spoil board on the table how far it comes down because i don't want to have the router bits sticking out any more than necessary.

Tom Ayres Fri 28 March 2014 07:36

That's some serious plate! Super Nice!

darren salyer Fri 28 March 2014 12:03

I'll second Toms comment.
