Some alternatives to Bosch grinders for skate
 

There is not a parts list for building the rail skate M610100A so I did my best to make one up:

Bosch Grinder (US): 1347A

Are you sure the Bosch 1347A will work? We bought the 1710 because the 1375A didn't work with the skate. The 1710 has a 7.5 amp motor.

Justin, are you saying that the 1347A had a different gearhead that would not fit the lasered skate? How well did the 1710 fit? Realise that I have never done it myself . . .

Is there a 1710 model? I only see 1810.

I believe we checked the 1375A it could have been the 1375-01. It had a 6Amp motor and didn't fit lasered skate. If you use my link and go to page 2 you will see the 1710 this is the one we purchased (fit perfectly). We did not check the 1347A. Just wanted to make sure the 1347A did work.

Bosch 1710 appears to be discontinued...
 

I ordered the Bosch 1710 and they responded with the following:

"BOS 1710 has been discontinued and replaced with part # BOS 1810PS.* The 1810PS is 4-1/2" small angle grinder."

Does anyone know for sure if the 1810 PS is a direct replacement for the 1710? Has anyone seen the 1810 at a big box store in the US?

Yep - I've been there... I've looked over the manuals and the service manuals and I can't find a photo comparing the bottom of the units. I think I'll have to find a real-life one and check it out.

Does anyone have an actual photo showing the bottom of the skate bracket attached to the grinder?

From the Parts Diagram of the 1810PS grinder in the link above, the 4 screws are mentioned as thread forming tap, screw. In my case, that thread turned out to be M4 X 0.7mm, the most common 4mm metric thread. You need to get longer screws to allow for the thick skate plate. And again, not too much longer, (same as with the geared stepper motor casings), because you could damage the alu gear casing of the grinder. Too short, and it will strip the threads. Rather buy too long and then cut to length. ie. cut so that it just tightens lightly without a washer, then add a washer.

The Bearing Flange number for the 1810PS is 1 607 000 374. From another source, the bearing flange for the 1710 is 1 607 000 347 so there are differences. The guard, fig#651 also differs, but fig#'s 35 and 49 are the same between the models.

I have a high confidence that the skate will fit to either model, the key being the 4 screws and their spacing. The large hole might need some enlarging, but I doubt that.

the hole spacing worked fore on the ryobi 4208 model. I had to enlarge the back part of the large hole for clearance. Otherwise, just as you mentioned. Thanks for the list in certain many will appreciate the help. Sean

New grinder Models "mostly" compatible with the Skate
 

Ok, I gave up on finding a real-life Bosch 1810 so I could see if it would fix the skate, so I trotted down to the evil Home Depot to view the selection of Ryobi and I did find the AG402. The AG402 is basicly the same grinder as the AG452, the difference is mainly that the AG402 is a 4.4amp grinder and the AG452 is a 5.5amps. Since the head and the bolt pattern was the same, I purchased the AG452 since the price difference was only $10.00 USD (29$ vs 39$).

The head/collar of the AG452/402 is 1.810" OD as the skate hole is 1.714", so smreish was correct - just minor clearancing. I'd just recommend the AG452 over the 402 for the extra power, plus the extra flapdisk and wire wheel it comes with. I'll post photos later showing it mounted along with the additional parts required.

The Ryobi AG452, 4 - 4mmx0.7x25mm bolts and the skate plates and you are set up grinder wise. The grinder is running $39 USD from Home Depot

My Hitachi 4" angle grinder is in no way close to fitting the skate, is anybody aware of or can recommend a grinder model here in Australia that will fit either the older or the newer type skate.

Tony, I have a Ryobi, a Hitachi & a Skil then I borrowed a couple of Boshe & Chinese grinders but non of them fit the skate perfectly. As I don't wish to buy another grinder, I just ground the screw slots on the skate to fit my Skil grinder.

All under control hopefully :mad: bought a Bosch grinder today and only had to make some very very minor mods to the skate:) for all to fit.

Are people using 4" and 5" grinders with their skates?? slight mods required to make the 5" disc fit the skate also.
Guess I should be able to use my Hitachi grinder for general work on the rest of the build.

I'm afraid slight grinding is required on the mounting holes.

4" grinder is the common practice.

To me 4" grinder handles beautifully with the skate, the 5" might be a bit cumbersome IMHO. If I can't remember exactly whether the 5" disc will run into something... or is it high risk to operate with the skate...

From my experience, you need more "feel" then power for good result on angle grinding.

Don't forget to secure the angle iron properly for safe operation, wear preparatory or at least a face mask & work outdoor if you don't like dusty shop. Can do without glooves.

5" is just a bit tall....works, but a little top heavy. I have had great success with both the 4" and the 4.5" grinders. Most recently the Ryobi 4.5" version worked well.

I have a Dewalt that will fit the skate. I could find the pn if anyone is interested.

I have posted a couple of photos showing the skate mounted to my new Bosch grinder. So far so good, will be interesting to see how the 5" goes. I am feeling confident but time will tell I guess.
