Thanks for the part number. Besides having been a Software Engineer in my career life, I was a Buyer for Walt Disney World in the early 70s. Old habits never die so I check out prices.

You are right the price directly from Standard Steel Specialty are cheaper.

Standard Steel...
I just ordered 5 - 200011 20Deg/20P 1/2" x 1/2" rack, 73" long for 149.00 (that includes the 25$ shipping) And this completes my buying for the MM #1 by Sean

Hello I have vexta PV 269 motors they are 440 oz with a 5/16 shaft i was looking at the gears from boston gear , I can only get a 14 tooth pinion with a 5/16 bore my question is will my motors with a 14 tooth gear direct drive work ? I am just trying to save some $$$ and use the motors i have.

Gerald D Sat 12 July 2008 10:55

5/16 shafts will not work for direct drive.

Welcome Art. I think almost all MMers in the US and many from other countries use your rack. It's a good idea for you to carry pinions, I would have ordered mine from you, it was a little confusing having to get the pinions from another company.
Tim was very easy to work with, very knowledgeable, I know he will be on top of this too.

smreish Mon 10 November 2008 18:18

My personal thanks to Art. You processed my order over year ago quickly and perfect quality. My thanks as well.
Welcome to the forum.
Sean

Art,
Are you going to start accepting paypal or credit cards anytime soon for ease of ordering? Just wondering. When do you think you will have the pinions available as I was just about to look into an order for my machine.

thanks :)

And a big welcome to the forum.

sailfl Tue 11 November 2008 01:21

Art,

I think you will find that you are our source for rack in the USA. You don't have to drum up business here. It is the place we buy. I agree that the only thing that would make it easier would be for you to accept credit cards or paypal. Even with the order and send check, you met my needs even when I had to order another piece.

Which pinions are most commonly needed

Standard Steel Specialty Company

We Would Consider Stocking The Pinions Equal To Boston Gear's Item #46133 20 Dp 20 Deg Pressure Angle, 20 Tooth Pinion. Our Price Would Be Approx $22.00 Each.

I'm Looking For Feed Back! Is This The Pinions You Use?

Richards Mon 17 November 2008 12:25

McMaster-Carr carries the 30-tooth, 1.5-inch pitch diameter, for $16.56 each (part number 5172T14). 20-degree pressure angle, 1/2-inch face width.

domino11 Mon 17 November 2008 12:44

People have used the 20 tooth, 30 tooth and 35 tooth pinions, from my memory.

sailfl Mon 17 November 2008 15:55

I bought the Boston Gear pinions through a local supplier for that price.

Gerald D Mon 17 November 2008 21:50

Art, the most popular pinion size would be 30Tooth DP20, PA20, 0.5"Face width, bored/reamed 0.5" two grubscrews 90 degree opposed. Would be a bonus if it can be offered as hardened.

Next popular would be the 20Tooth.

Greg J Tue 18 November 2008 06:20

For what it's worth ....

I'm finding that two grub screws (with loctite) in one hole is working fine.

artf Tue 18 November 2008 07:23

Greg,

The Pinion You List At Mcmaster Is Plain Bore Without Keyway And Set Screws

Art

artf Tue 18 November 2008 07:27

I Think I Need To Add Our Pinions Would Be With Keyway And 2 Set Screws.

20 Tooth - Approx $22.00 Each
25 Tooth - Approx $23.50 Each
30 Tooth - Approx $26.00 Each

domino11 Tue 18 November 2008 10:40

Art,
That doesnt sound too bad, how about the paypal or credit card for ordering, Is that a possibility of happening? It would make it a lot easier for us Canadian guys. :)

servant74 Fri 19 December 2008 21:31

Art,

Just a thought, but depending on the orders you tend to get, you might put together a 'MultiMate' SKU that contains the most ordered rack and pinions, and possibly other items, or at least a page that might list suggested SKU numbers for rapid ordering.

Having you on the forums is great in any case!

Selling Pinions

On a previous posting, it was stated that Standard Steel Specialty may begin offering pinions for sale that could be used with the 20 DP racks we currently sell. As it turns out, we have decided against selling the pinions. Of course we will continue to sell the racks.

kanankeban Wed 18 February 2009 18:09

Tim
What about the paypal payment, I live in Mexico, my shipping address is in the states but the best way to pay for me is paypal. If this couldnt be how could I pay for my order?
Regards,

Tim Oravitz Thu 19 February 2009 09:53

Payment explanation

Payment can only be made by sending either a check or money order. We do not accept credit cards or paypal. This is because all other gear rack business is with OEM's or distributors and they all have accounts established. This segment (MechMate) of our business, in terms of percentage, is non existent and consequently makes no sense for us to take on the added expenses associated with the use of credit.

kanankeban Fri 20 February 2009 08:13

Tim,
Paypal is easy...and Im sure all the guys around here out of US will be glad to pay the extra expenses for using paypal, they charge a small comision that we can cover for you, no extra expenses involved for you ;), either way the we have to pay for the transfer or money order. Paypal registration takes just a few minutes and its free :D. .Although, Im sure everybody around here will follow your preferences to get your products...Ill do!
Kindest Regards,
Hector

Pinion Quality

Is their any immediate and compelling reason for me to buy the more expensive euro made $ 38.00 AUD pinions compared to the Chinese $ 8.00 AUD version?

I am not into solving problems that i don't have, but was curious as to what i would be missing out on not selecting the more expensive pinion.

Any advice would be great!:)

KenC Sat 10 July 2010 22:15

You will most likely need to clip off 2~3" of each ends of the AU8 rack which are not really well made.

rotorzoomer Tue 13 July 2010 03:41

Pinions

I will go with the cheaper version unless anybody can comment and add a few more words of wisdon, will see how it goes with the general china pinions.

A good quick article from Moore Gear

LazyMan Wed 04 May 2011 14:25

Anyone order racks from standard steel recently? I was quoted

P/N 200011 3 PCS. @ $38.00 EA.
S/H $50.00
TOTAL $164.00

I guess prices have gone up quite a bit in last four years.

smreish Wed 04 May 2011 16:57

steel prices have tripled since I built my first machine in 2007...that sounds about right for today's inflation.
