Hello from NH

Hello,
I'm a hobbyist who is a member of a pretty cool nonprofit member run maker space. We have access to many cool CNC tools, laser, plasma, small mills, 3d printers etc. But no routers as of yet. (the mill is a very small and suitable only for small aluminum/plastic parts) I'm a wood guy and have been wanting a large format CNC router for some time.

Anyways, this sounds like a perfect project, to get this wood guy, to take advantage of the tools and people available (a lot of metal fabricators with tools/skills) to learn something and to end up adding an amazing piece of hardware to the shop for everyone to enjoy.

I haven't purchased the plans yet, I have a few questions...

First, How much, ball park, for all the materials?
I know I should dig through all the forums but looking for a range.

How complete are the plans parts lists / supplier lists?

This would likely be partly a self/group-funded and require board-approval.
So I want to develop a solid project plan.
I guess this is starting the feasibility study part.
(not to mention its probably pretty expensive.)

Open to all pointers. I'm smart, but not that smart. So I'd likely be trying to organize a bunch of smart people to make this happen.

Thank you for any and all advice!

ok, I bought the plans.

I think I'll start by modeling these parts.
maybe that's the wrong place to start.
could be a time-hole but will probably help me get my head around it.

how/where do you buy steel stock for a reasonable price?

(not amazon?)

Welcome,
Try Yellow Pages or Google steel suppliers in your area.

Welcome aboard. I can send you a complete list of items I can supply for you. I can source most all of the parts for the build except screws, bolts and straight steel. I'll send you a PM. - Mike

In NH I would recommend Choice Metals out of Goffstown or Yarde Metals out of Pelham. To buy just let them know (either by email or phone) what size you are looking for and they can get you an estimate.
