What does $389 (delivered) get you in a Spindle?
 

So my air cooled Chinese 3kw spindle came today.

Weights about 9 pounds, fit and finish look much better than expected for China. Ebay seller (qiandingzhensatisfaction) says "Ships from USA", but of course it came DHL from China.

It came with five ER20 collets, 4, 6.5, 8, 12mm and 1/2 inch.

Collet nut has been bored and balanced.

No manual or paperwork of any kind.

What VFD are you going to hook this to? How long did it takes to get it?

We thought hard about getting the water cooled model, but the extra hours of messing with a water pump, radiator and some sort of reservoir finally removed it from our minds.

Understand that. Do you have a link to the seller on ebay.

Let me know if you need a VFD for it.

We did not know you sold VFDs, you should make a sticky of all the stuff you sell. I've only seen a few items on your web page.

No problem - I am always adding and just have added the VFD. Does the x200 do 400hz? Yes it does.

Were the additional collets listed in the ad? I just had a quick look at the listings for 3KW air cooled and none mentioned the additional collets.

When I asked if collets were available, he said some holders came with it. I just figured that is what he called them.

I was glad to see a plain old 1/2" collet included, for us USA users, LOL.

I have ordered one as well and will see if the extra collets arrives with it.

BTW, the collets were just taped into the side packing foam.

Look for them, or you may well throw them out with the other material. The layers of foam packing was not the best. You won't keep the box once you unpack it, that's for sure.

Well I am dealing AGAIN with Mr/Ms LOVEHAPPYSHOPPING.
This last spindle indicated $391 FREE SHIPPING.
Again the same story....Ebay is at fault...South Africa is in Zone 8 and expensive to ship to....bla bla bla. Please pay £28.00 into my PayPal account.
Well this time I am not pressured to get the spindle and I refused to budge.
Told him to study English as FREE SHIPPING means FREE SHIPPING...not add £28.00 to the price..
Got a message that he is losing on this deal but will send the spindle....FREE SHIPPING ;)
It is now 3 day's...should have it by middle of next week...hopefully

Not sure if the guy is a scammer, I would had asked for a refund and shop elsewhere.

It looks OK, the seller agreed to the free shipping after all.

Pablo, he did offer my money back and I refused. I feel that if he advertise it on black and white as FREE SHIPPING it is not an eBay fault as he indicated, that is why I went for him.... Also he tried this trick on me before.

The same spindles are offered at different prices with different postage rates but added together always come to the same gross price!He states the items are located in Portsmouth UK but I suspect they would be posted direct from china.

It would be intresting to hear any comments about the spindles he is selling.

Here is the pinout for the Spindle.

Note that this is a 5 pin connector, when you only have 3 phases to connect the spindle.

Pins 1,2,and 3 are the only pins wired inside of the hood.

*The GND pin is not wired internally, so only a tiny screw makes contact with the hood, and this screw has a rubber O-ring to keep dust out. I'd recommend that you drill and tap a real ground somewhere on the Spindle body.

I decided to TRY the Chinese VFD.
Easy to program.
Ran it on my machine without any FUNNIES or Hennie Spooks so far.
Now I am happy again...;)

Hi James, I don't bother with Mach and spindle control (KISS) keep it simple is my motto.
I do get Mach to switch it ON / OFF and that is it.
I mostly cut at 12000 rpm. If I want to go higher it is easy to press a button on VFD and up or down the speed.
Mine was wrapped VERY well....basically one box in another with lot's of foam and tape.
The VFD box was not so sturdy, but nothing wrong with it.

I kept mine even simple... manual on/off. :P

Sure you can just turn it on, but remember, unlike a router, a spindle needs to be warmed up at several different speeds or you will prematurely wear out your bearings.

Of course our Chinese routers did not come with those instructions, but the originals they cloned did. Replacing the bearings could run as much as a whole new spindle.

Usually the recommended code looks something like this:

Colombo says to run for 25 min each at 20%, 50%, 75% and 100% RPM the first time out, and again if the spindle sits more than a month.

The least expensive way to have Mach3 control your spindle speed is with a RS232 to RS485 adapter. These run under $3.

Because they run from your 9 pin serial port, they don't use up a precious data line on the parallel port.

On the X200 VFD, you need just 2 wires from the RS485. Mach3 already has the code modules for this called a BRAIN.

A couple of you guys have emailed me in defense of the Chinese VFDs (specifically the Haunyang). I did not mean to step on anybody's toes. If they are working for you, you made the right choice.

For our own decision in choosing the Hitachi X200:

1. Using Ebay pricing, the X200 is only $17 more than the Haunyang (combo price on 3kw spindle and Haunyang VFD is $622. Subtract the spindle price of $389 and the Haunyang VFD cost is $232).

2. X200 is made in Japan.

3. X200 can be serviced locally. 2 year warranty.

4. X200 has a heavily illustrated English instruction manual.

5. $3 hook up and control in Mach3. No relays to buy, no Speed Control card to buy.

6. Toll free phone number for actual human tech support.


The phone number alone has got to be worth $17, LOL.
