It always amazes me when I read old hardware catalogs and books how little really has changed in the last 100 years. It's like Sean's comment here:

I wonder how many good ideas are still out there, waiting to be resurrected and applied with current technology...

FYI - for those looking for out of copyright books, catalogs and the like - a good location is:

http://www.archive.org

In addition to print and media, you can even find old versions of websites (great for when they've removed something you saw in the past). Here is the first version of the MechMate forum from 2006:
