We know there comes a time when we have to convince the financial manager of the need for a MechMate. Please give links that inspire, and that we can show to her.

Here is a guy in Sweden who is having his first steps with a CNC router:
http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/312/22745.html
He writes in a very readable english :)

Now why do I mention him in a "budget approval" thread? . . . . . Have a look at what he said today:
http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/show.cgi?tpc=312&post=55626#POST55626

We found the very same situation in Cape Town....big companies with big CNC routers pushing out square panels all day, and then very happily outsourcing the smaller, more "complicated" jobs at very high prices.

Designer Ronen kadushin web site :):

http://www.ronen-kadushin.com/, see Open Design chapter.

"...In Open Design, the design is a two dimensional "cutout" represented as digital information. It relies on the Internet's communication resources, to publish, distribute, and copy the designs under a CreativeCommons deed. Coupled with The flexibility of CNC production methods, all technically conforming designs are continuously available for production, in any number, with no tooling investment, anywhere and by anyone..", Ronen kadushin.

Hello Gerald, Hello friends,

I just would like to present my new web site concerning my Mechmate use in France (with some new furnitures drawings) and a blog concerning :

- Home manufacturing
- Social engeneering (like the Mechmate Network).
- DIY knowledge network.

"Social Engeneering" is a concept of Neil Gershenfeld, MIT Professor who have created the Fab Lab and make a CNC(shopbot)on wheels to run across the US .
See post below in this thread ((http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_fab_lab))

My web adress : www.ecomanufacture.fr (with automatic translation !).

Sun 14 March 2010, 00:47
Most of the big iron machines offer the option of a second spidle with a saw blade attached (usually fixed in one axis - the longest one). It is also possible to add an Aggerate Head to the main spindle that can take a saw blade, rotating head for a router cutter etc but is does require a very substantial Spindle with auto tool change and a 4th axis in the spindle to move the aggregate to the required orientation. The saw blade can still only do straight cuts (albeit at any angle). Both machines I used to work on had the option fitted with a fixed axis blade - never used them, could do everything I wanted with just the spindle head. The drill heads on the other hand were used constantly and that would be a useful addition .

I liked the Christmas Tree so much, I created a version of it.

My supplier of Sintra gave me the 0.5" material, black was not my first choice but it was free. He is going to paint it green and display it. He gave me a sheet of 0.25" material and I will be cutting another one in white.

I just need some presents to go under the tree.

Nils....is that cut recently? After our little adjustments?
How do those curves look now?

danilom
Wed 16 November 2011, 17:11
We have it here named FOREX and its great for making stuff, the model bridge in the showroom was made with it, but in a thickness of 13mm its really expensive to just make something :) , easy to paint and it accepts all kinds of colors
The white stuff I cut, will get the edges dirty if you touch it too much and manipulate it a lot around workshop. One side is printable in our European version,
and as LASER guys just can't cut it (PVC stinks as hell and burns easy) its interesting to mention it that it can be printed and cut out the print if its irregular shape.
If you get a fuzzy edge just rub it along with another piece of same material.

sailfl
Wed 16 November 2011, 17:20
Yes, I cut the tree on Tuesday. The curves look good Sean and thanks for stopping by and your suggestions.

There are some minor problems but I cut the 0.5" material with an 0.125" Diameter bit x 0.5" cutting length at 100 IPM so there are some places where it is not as smooth as I would like. Plus as you know Sintra is tough stuff.

Over the last two days, I have cut 13 sheets of 0.75" cheap China Birch Ply with my compression bit in two passes and the curves look good and no chatter or very minor. There is some fuzzes but I have used the same bit to cut about 50 sheets of this same ply and some MDF. Some of the sheets have had lots of parts cut out.

I am very pleased with the change and I very pleased with the bit.

Danilo, with the bits I use, I do not get any fuss on the edges. The material cuts very smooth.

Gerald D
Fri 27 June 2014, 21:02
Tom, this is the old method for a 2-sided cut:

. . . In your cutting program, you sink a 6mm [1/4"] cutter right through the border scrap all the way into the table top. Then you put dowels through those holes. Flip over and go back to the known dowel holes.

those ones are actually done by laser ( I think it's better/quicker then milling for those small thing ), but cool anyway !

I love those tables with the glass inserts. I have some wild edge cherry in the shop and just might try that.

I think lapstrake boats and stitch and glue are particularly suited to CNC routing. CNC can cut sophisticated strong and beautiful scarf joints from ply they can cut out the developed shapes, with accuracy, that will then twist into the compound shapes required by boats. Plywood is strong, flexible and beautiful.

Check out http://www.pinterest.com/dalerogers/caledonia-yawl/ for my inspiration to build the MechMate and projects.

I think the history of CNC during World War 2 and subsequent modernist movement, bauhaus and the ideals behind democratic design are really interesting. Not only did manufacturing and automation drive significant innovation in materiality and design but it promoted democratic ideas for living. Flatpack furniture has to be one of the most iconic material innovations that came out of this period. The key in my mind is design. Anyone with time and motivation can build a box. But it takes design creativity to take the constraints inherent within material and manufacturing processes and make it a thing of comfort and beauty. These may be simple materials and simple manufacturing automation but they are, in my eye, beautiful objects that highlight creative design and innovative use of technology and material.

Check out my furniture and object inspiration that is ideally suited to CNC manufacture. http://www.pinterest.com/dalerogers/cnc-made/

These joint examples highlight both the constraints of CNC construction as well as creative and innovative solutions to those constraints. For example 3 axis CNC Mills are unable to produce internal corners. These examples show how designers have worked around this problem by either developing solutions that hide the internal radius or highlight the internal radius as an aesthetic design solution.

Make Magazine did this great article on CNC made joint techniques.

That is a designer chair. Copying that is in essence illegal...
And it's danish high quality woodworking design...

Not trying to initiate a dispute, I just posted a link for a chair that can be copied or serve as inspiration, whatever its done with it its a problem of the maker not the messenger...

IMHO these kind of warnings are useless, they are not useless if posted in a thread of a maker trying to sell exact copies, or if you are anal, inspired copies...

Very nice, I wonder how they keep it in a desired position, no stops to be seen in the photos.

Pablo, maybe it works on a "key" system, the ply has notches cut out at intervals and the silver is the key that lock it into position.
