Fri 01 February 2008, 14:55
I have found a place that will cut, engrave part number, and bend 25 parts for $375.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am getting the first lot (The Mamba with geared motors) cut and bent to see if there any glitches.
The rail skate is included in this as well!!
I have not gotten a prices for the Classic version. So let me know if you would want me to check into that.

I would like to give thanks to Gerald D. and Evey one else who has helped in making this possible, Without Yall....we would just be living dull lives.

Inquire if they will pack them for shipping and how much. This is a very good price.

I tried not to do a back flip in there office when he quoted me the price. The shipping will have to be on my shoulders though. They were extremely fast getting me a quote. We will see how long it takes to cut and bend.
I think its my time to help out because I'll be asking lots of question later:o:)

What types of motors is everyone leaning toward (Geared or Direct)?

Doug_Ford
Fri 01 February 2008, 19:43
Joe,

Geared motors are what Gerald is currently recommending.

Sat 02 February 2008, 13:03
Gerald,

Not so! For example one location in Washington DC has 20012.

My zip is 32789 for the 5 digit code. People are suppose to use the full nine digits which for me is 32789 3333. The first 5 digits give you the post office. The additional 4 locate the street.

I am new to the project and have been working on a small scale CNC which is nearing completion. I am interested in the laser cut parts for a larger scale project however I am still looking over the plans and reading posts in the forums.
Is this quote for all the parts for the MechMate or is this for some of the more complex pieces.
Birmingham is just 3 hours away so I would be able to pick up allot easier than shipping. Just wanted to make sure what was included.

Doug

Doug_Ford
Tue 05 February 2008, 19:21
Doug,

Those are the more complex parts that have to be cut and bent. You still need to supply the tubes for the gantry and all of the steel in the table assembly.

OK,

Well I got my hands on the Options Excel file.. Thanks Joe for the PM

So to get an idea on how much I will spend on just the metal to build the Mamba's super structure not including all the electronics and other expensive tid bits what an I looking at.

$375.00 Laser cut and bends for the more detailed pieces
$???.?? For the rest of the gantry and table assembly

Thanks,

$???.?? For the rest of the gantry and table assembly

Thanks,

Doug aka The other Doug

I have a steel distribution warehouse, and I priced the structural materials for just the table. This is not including the ground angle iron rail for the V rollers.
I came up with aprox. $425.00 using 7" channel for the main runners. It would be probably $25 more or less using 6" or 8" channel, but that should be a ballpark estimate, if you purchase from a steel distributer rather than a welding shop.
You can't get 2 pcs. 131.9in. out of one 20ft pc. even if the channel runs a couple of inches long(usually do) and you are carefull with the angle cutt, at best you will only be able to get 2-126in. pcs. the plan shows 131.9in. if you don't want the rail overhanging. If I am reading that correct

Wed 06 February 2008, 09:08

I sent a PM to Sean to see what the status is with the guy he has been working with in Orlando. I have not heard back from him. I suspect that it will be cheaper to buy from him. So most likely I will buy from Sean's source. I will use the Alabama source as a backup.

Everyone, the one off parts should be ready tomorrow!! They are at the fabricator now being bent. I want to take some pictures and measure the thicknesses to make sure all the parts are going to be correct.
I will post pictures of all the parts to let everyone know exactly what they are getting.
Also to anyone who is thinking of making a MM (Mamba) please add yourselves to the list to order a set, so I can tell them to cut a specific number of sets.

If I forgot someone, Please let me know. I don't want to leave anyone out and I'm going to keep mine this time. I don't mind ordering parts in the future but in 5 or more quantities. The price might change too due to rise of steel and labor.

I am taking payment by Paypal (its fast and free) for the parts at this time. This way I don't get stuck with extra sets and finance charges.
At the time of shipping I will send you a email telling you how much shipping is to your location. This will a 60LBS box. UPS Shipping & Insurance to Myozman was $40.00. Shipping to a business will be a little cheaper than a residence.
So, all that been said, email your: Name, Shipping Address, If you ordering bearings (qty) and I will tell you the email to send the money to on paypal.
This way I won't get racked.:D

I talked to the laser people on Wednesday and they were finishing up with cutting them.
He told me that he would ask them to put a hurry up on the bending. This was the longest part in the process, on the first run of parts.
I know that everyone is eager to get their parts as much as I am to get mine, so be patient and I'll keep bugging them.

Thanks

Got my parts yesterday and put the car together to see how it fit. Very nice fit, no gaps anywhere. The spider had stress cracks on the outside of the bends but not bad, I will fill the cracks with my mig and sand flat with a flapdisk. Why the extra motor plate?

Fri 11 April 2008, 10:39
I supposed it was for a second y-motor?

If that is the case, I must point out that I ignored a second y-motor when doing the cable chain position for the gantry. You might have to lengthen the chain a bit and/or re-position the brackets.

Also realise that the "Full Options" will only work with the geared OM motors.

O.K. Things are slowing down and It is looking like a good time to place another order!!

There are two guys that are committed and wanting a set of parts.:):)
There are about ten or so people riding the MM fence.
They need at least four or more people to commit to buy parts before I place another order.

A set of Mamba parts and 8 bearings for the skate is $397.00 Plus whatever shipping is to your location. The price might change due to timing of order and increases in our economy.

Joe, there is also a move afoot (http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12658#post12658) to increase the hole size in the grinder skate so that other brands of angle grinders can more easily be fitted.

Also extending the lower x-axis cable chain brackets would be very helpful:

http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11591&postcount=29

One could debate that if you purchase a cable chain with a tight enough radius, this isn't an issue but there isn't any "loss" to making the top of the brackets longer, it only pushes the mounting point up on the beam:

Hi Joe,
My first post on this forum...

If you don't already have a full parts order go ahead and put me down
for one more complete kit (for a total of 2 units).

Maybe if there's one slot left someone else who's on the fence might jump!

Again, thanks for putting the order together! And thanks to Gerald and the rest for getting me into this boodoggle.

Cheers!

It's only a boondoggle if you don't use it to make money.... I guess you could call that a hobby... :)

Hi Joe,
My first post on this forum...

Hey, another Jeff, and one on the left coast, to boot!

I'm going to build one of these too, but I'm going to be a few months behind you, I suspect.

Keep us posted on your progress, it's good that another is being built in my (relative) neighborhood.

Ha! Thanks Jeff, Nice to meet you!

Yeah I've been a lurker for a long time and started collect the bits
and pieces. When I saw this post from Joe about getting all of the pieces
cut and delivered I decided it was time to jump.

The other thing that was holding me back was how to cut the rails but after
I saw DMoore's youtube video on the steelmax saw I was sold (Thanks David!)

I'll be starting this thing seriously in a few weeks so I'll keep you posted.
Let me know how your build goes as well!

Thanks for all the info and encouragement.

To add to the confusion - Another Jeff is here getting ready to build - I'm waiting on a quote here locally from my laser cutter, depending on what they come up with I would like to get in the parts order. I'm in Greensboro, NC (27410). Can't wait to get started.

Joe, here is a very fresh set of drawings. I think you are 99.999% safe to order from this set.

Dang, I spoke too soon:

Serious warning for laser cutters and benders: Part 1060215 has been revised with longer legs in the cutting (P) drawing. This drawing also shows the engraving of the bend positions. However, the bending version (B) of that drawing does not show the longer legs yet. Bending as per the older B drawing will be incorrect. Bending must be done on the laser engrave, 100mm from the tips, as per drawing below:

Gerald,
I got my sets cut from the original mamba set from Nov. Will I have a problem?

Gerald D
Fri 27 June 2008, 08:06
November 07 was fine. It is the quick drawing patch I did 2 weeks ago that has the bug, that bug being on the bending only, not the cutting. If the supplier's read the drawings carefully, matching rev notes and dates, they could spot the oversight on my part. My supplier got it right for 5 sets - then he messed up one set delivered today (a week later).

He made another booboo: I recently supplied a bending drawing for 1030422B in .dxf format, from which I purposely deleted all the small holes so that there there would be no conflict with 1030422P which was to be used for cutting. Well, he saw two .dxf's for the same part, and laser cut from the bending drawing, leaving out all the small holes! Another solid argument for supplying minimal .dxf drawings.

I have more or less resolved to spend this weekend tidying up these little loose ends - but the house maintenance all needs to be done if the weather clears. . . .

Manny, A set of Mamba parts is $396.00. That is for 24 Parts and 8 Bearings that you will need for the rail skate.
I have two extra sets added to the cut list. One of them is yours, if you are ready.?
Send me your full shipping address so I can figure out what shipping is to you.

Thanks

When you can not lift, hire some one and charge a little more. The parts are too good for you to go out of business.

My parts arrived today. Thanks Joe! To others considering, Joe was great to deal with, and the parts look very good. There are a few sharp edges (tiny burrs) to soften from the laser cuts (as in 4-5 out of 100 or so edges), so overall the quality is quite impressive. The packaging was good.

John,

I purchased a set of Joe's laser parts. They are very good quality. I would suggest you check around but because Joe has them cut a number of them at one time it helps reduce the price.

He will give you a delivery price but Joe ships by UPS and so the price should not be that high.

Good luck with your build.

They had lightning strike one of there buildings. So, the guy I deal with has been dealing with a few broken machines and I think he is a little overwhelmed.
I hope to be getting the parts this week. I will drop by to see what is up on Monday.
I will post what I find out tomorrow.

Thu 28 August 2008, 16:18
Jack, I have added a few additional pieces added to the kit that J.R. came up with on his machine that I thought might be beneficial to some. I think the next batch will be in the range of $450.00.
I hope it is less but I feel that its been too good for too long with out an increase. I hope I'm wrong.
I will post some pictures and price when I get them.

how much for a mamba spider cut and bent?

servant74
Fri 29 August 2008, 14:35
slightly off subject. Given that the current parts are about $400 US, roughly what does the rest of the parts cost (no spindle, motors or electronics)?
(purchasing metal new, with no scrounging abilities!)

How do the economics of a 4x8" MechMate compare to a ShopBot PR when we get close to comparing apples to apples?

Now I will go hide with my dunce cap on.

jbmclain
Fri 29 August 2008, 22:46
Heath, the added parts are from J.R.'s creative thoughts. He modified the skate a little so I added that part and four 3" discs for the feet. You can use them or not. I didn't think it would hurt to add them to the cut parts.
I will produce some picks when I get them back.

If I had to guess and that's exactly what I'm doing, I would say around $5,000 in the U.S. That's a 4' X 8' basic machine with a router. If you were able to shop a little, find some deals you could cut that to around $4,000.

Art,
Hopping your having fun !
As for your quest about just getting a spider done , you’ll agree estimates varies from shop to shop & a bit more expensive if only the spider done/ordered. For what it’s worth, I got an estimate for 23.89$ as part as a complete mamba order and some.
Hope this can help, Robert ;)
