What is the huge compressor for?

That Quincy (http://www.quincycompressor.com/qr25.html) has been used by 3 generations in the family over about 40 years. Probably had 5 oil changes max. and no other attention (except for mandatory pressure vessel inpections). Still runs like a watch.
