Hi Gerald and all Mechmate builders!

My name is Stefan and I’m from Romania – Baia Mare. I’m sorry if my English is not so good!
I would like to take the opportunity to thank Gerald for this excellent forum and the idea to share wealthy information.
Until now I’ve read all the articles about how to build a MM from this forum.
My hobby is woodworking.
Well now I am ready to start to build the MechMate
I´m going to use my MM mostly for furniture, ornamentals.
Work area : 1220 x 2440mm (4' x 8')
The stepper motors 34HS9801
Stepper drives Gecko 203V, bob PMDX-122
I have Power Supply transformer with 28 V AC secondaries 300 – 400 VA.
3:1 belt reduction, 16 tooth pulley -48 tooth pulley , the belt is a 295-T5-16 ;
Rack - Module 1 , pinion 26 teeth ; http://www.chiaravalli.it/home/pdf_ita/CREMAGLIERE.pdf

Future upgrade : 4th axis

Hi Krasch, you're right they are good carpenters in this area - Maramures!
I did this furniture 10 years ago, when none dreamed of MM….
If I had one then I think it would be more artistic.
When I’ll finish my MM, I hope to do something nice !

Very nice Stefan. It looks like all solid wood. Did you make the inner parts of the doors FLOATING / loose or did you glue it all together? I am asking bacause I was at my local woodworkers meeting on Wednesday evening and an expert had a talk about using solid timer in this matter. He was going on and on about making a floating or loose construction so that when the wood move, it does not produce cracking.

The interior parts of the doors are separately applied to the back channel, do not stick them because the wood works and you need to allow expansion or contraction, otherwise it will crack.

Welcome Stefan. Ce mai faci? I have friends in Oradea. I have been there many times. I have seen some excellent wood work too. and what is most impressive is the tools that were used... :o But I know a pretty good woodworker in Germany too

I wanted to buy Stepper Motors 34HS9801 but shipping is very high:

34HS9801 $ 55.00/pcs, ---------------- 4pcs $ 220.00
Express Freight Charges ---------------------- $ 300.00
PayPal surcharges (5%) ---------------------- $ 26.00
------------------------------------------------- SUM - $ 546.00

I want to buy these stepper motors similar to Deitech Co. 86HS9801., Ltd, I hope these are good:

The FOB price for 86HS9801 is USD48.00, 4 PCs to ship to Romania, the DHL freight is USD160, USD352 so totally it cost for you to get 4 pcs in the door.

What do you say, are these as good as the MotionKing's?

KenC

I use 86HS9801, can't comment on MK motors as I never have any.

Kobus_Joubert
Mon 12 April 2010, 10:18
I had the same problem.....freight cost more than the steppers...., but I am happy with my 9801's....nearly 2 years of use ... playing with them.

You should call me first...:). There is a shop near me with everything you need. They don't have Oriental Motors but you should try their stuff. Most important is the service and 2 years guarantee. This is a very well known shop in Bucharest for electronics.
Check their site http://www.conexelectronic.ro/produse.php?id=459 and if is OK I'll go there to make the shopping for you.
Call me tomorrow.

Hi...si salut

I am looking for a CNC workshop to move our production from middle east to romania. Searched for a while but most of the routers we found are just 8*4, too little for us, we need working area min 3000*1540mm (10*5).
I saw here many mentioning about such workshops, and was wondering if any can recommend a good and serious having such a machine, would be very helpful. Some basic requirements:
- 3000*1540 working area
- vacuum table
- at least 25k rpm
- good planarity of the table for all the surface (worst case scenario, the table needs to be resurfaced)

if any of you has an idea about such machine, please et me know. or if any can build and run such a machine, would be ok too, we can discuss details and be very flexible.

thanks

Meanwhile, I've been working on some other things to get money.
I started the construction and made the first purchases.
I've bought the stepper motors from Deitech http://www.driver-motor.com . They came really fast and had good prices.

Stefan - how is the quality of the racks from Deitech, or did you get them locally??

Sun 20 June 2010, 05:10
Irfan, what are the sizes of the aluminium plates that are you using for axis Z?
You used linear size for axis Z 25mm thk slides. Can I use 20mm ones?
I have bought the racks from a local dealer http://www.chiaravalli.it/home/pdf_ita/CREMAGLIERE.pdf. They seem really good.
By the way, what program do you use to make 3d modeling of the MechMate (http://www.mechmate.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=7328&stc=1&d=1259410297 ) ? SolidWorks? Thanks.

Mon 21 June 2010, 21:40
Hi Stefan, yes you can use 20mm rails, I just used what were available, the right sizes would be the ones Ken used - mine were experimental and Ken refined those, PM me your email id and I will find out from Ken what he used as final plate sizes and email it to you.

yes thats solidworks, and the main models are from PEU

Everybody probably knows already but that foot material is old conveyor belt from rock quarry or such. Also good to put in your horse trailer for the horses to stand on! Don't forget if you are cutting rubber, it is easier when it is wet.

I use a MMA Gysmi 165 inverter http://www.cromwell.co.uk/GYS8801650D with basic electrodes OK 48.60 http://pdf.directindustry.com/pdf/esab/manual-metal-arc-electrodes/18224-84893-_5.html . After the welding I grinded the parts with an angle grinder and then smoothed them with a rotary wire brush attached to my angle grinder (something like that http://www.toolshopdirect.co.uk/item.php/store/34/c1/158/c2/2636/sn/WB04 ).

Mon 05 July 2010, 21:06
Thanks for details! It really helps, I have no experience welding and I'm trying to decide if I should try embarking on this or just having it done by a friend (professional welder).
I'm kinda going towards "outsourcing" this part.

Like you I would probably favour using some bolts, since I will probably have to move the machine not too far from now.

Thanks again!

ESAB is very familiar to me! I own one also. Mine is 90i I think and is tig, (tungsten inert gas) and stick. (shielded metal arc).

If you have someone to show you arc welding, you will learn much faster. I am the proof though that it is possible to learn from books and the internet.

Ciao Stefan,
Compliments for your building !
As you see I just completed the my Mechmate .... so I'm fresh on spindle buy.
I bought a 220 V - 2,0 kw. The choise between 220-380 it just relatet on what you have as line in your shop, the advantage of 380 V is that you charge less your supply line (3 wire (+1) inster of one) but concerning the spindle there is no difference (the spindle is always 3 phase 220 or 380 but both 3 phase). About the power I was considering a 3 kw but a friend told me that he has a 2 kw wich is perfect, so for an economic reason :-) I choosed a 2kw .... well it was a good choice it's very powerfull. no need for more power. Somewere Gerald said: the power of the spindle is related to the dimension of the mills you need to use. So bigger the mills bigger the spindle. Mine as ER20 collet that means you can use 13mm mills (maniy mills have the shaft of 12 mm but the head is much bigger).
So if you plan to use burs (mills) like those : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HlvAkBTSvA&feature=related
a 2 kw it's not enough, but maybe even the Mechmate it's bit light for those heads mills :-)
or those :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mWA7GM5KTQ&feature=related

Hi Stefan, it is really nice to see the machine hopping from end to end to produce these 3d images.

I would suggest you do the rough cut with a 6mm (1/4 inch is fine ) straight cutter. This reduces time to cut as well. The straight cutter take more wood away than a 6mm ballnose per cut.
Then the final pass you use a 3mm ballnose cutter with a 10% or smaller stepover...you will have a very smooth finish that hardly needs sanding this way.
Softwood will not give a nice smooth cut, but the hardwoods like oak finishes off very nicely.

A "lately" Happy New Year to all of you!
I managed to buy a 2.2kw water cooled Spindle and some cutters.

Now the last thing I need to do is to program de VFD. Does anybody have some experience in programming this VFD (Delta VFD022EL21A) with this kind of spindle?

http://www.motorsystems.com/docs/im_delta_el_quickstart.pdf

I found this quick start guide... only 25 pages lol :D !!!

For real though VFD are pretty straight forward if you sit down and read the manual a few times first. You will see things like Minimum Frequency, Accel and Decel Time, Max Freq etc. Max Freq for your unit looks to be 600Hz. Your Spindle is max rated at 400Hz so make sure you don't over drive it.

We do some over driving at the lower freq's like i have done here on my old South Bend Lathe here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsR_VuPTB8k&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

Just pay attention to the specs on your spindle and the settings in the VFD. A few times over it and it all starts making sense.

Thanks for your help Mike!

I managed to program the Delta VFD, it is not so hard as I thought, and the spindle is running very silent (I haven't put the water cooling yet).

I've encountered some difficulties... While taking this on the camera, my clothe was catched and couldn't move. Luckily I took the idea to put more stop buttons and could reach it!

Nice,

What cutter did you use for FINAL cut..
I use 3mm ballnose with 10% stepover.
Another trick is to do final cut in X-direction and then another in Y-direction.

On Youtube I would call it GRAPE not Strawberries ..

Hi Stefan

Thanks for the video, you risked you life to do it for us by the sound of it
All that safety stuff a a complete waste of time and money.... until you need it:)

The new VFD and spindle looks great on #73.

And the last test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9UqwF3Dbww
Took it 10 hours to finish those big grapes...
Thanks and congratulations for this outstanding project, Gerard! The MM handled this work without any problems and it's still standing!

You are brave to do such a big piece. Looking good, but I am sure that you should be able to speed it up a lot more. Once you have done your Rough cut and removed most of the wood with a 6 or 12mm straight cutter, your Final cut with a smaller Ballnose bit should only take about 1mm off, and therefore you can speed it up.

@Mike 10-12 hours, it depends how fast the feed-rate or stepover is.
@Kobus No, I received that model from a friend.

Hi Stefan.

Seriously "Walnut table with some grapes on it" is a little undersold, try masterpiece.
Humbled by your skill and a great pleasure to view your contributions to the forum.

Kindest regards

And my last work, I tried to mill Aluminium with some of my used wood mills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpXsciBiQhY
If I had some aluminium mills, I think it would have gone much better.
I'll prepare some stuff for a new cnc.

Hallo. I've cut the piece with laser at home in Baia Mare. Do you not have a laser cutting machine there?
