View Full Version : Beefing up a thin spider

Various spider plate suppliers have made spiders which are only 3mm [1/8"] thick and these thin spiders are giving flexibility problems. The simplest reinforcement that I can come up with is the following:

2404
The green bars are about 8 x 12mm [5/16 x 1/2"]

Or, even further, add the white:
2405

Gerald the drawings seem to be good and nicely structured. Should hold the spider firm.

If the guide wheel bolts were extra long and went through the green bars it would be even stronger.

@all,

I am preparing the sheets and a USB stick for laser cutting my parts.
According to the DXF the spinder plate (10 40 432 ) should be 5mm thick. Yet the XLS document suggested a preferred thickness of 4mm. Which one is right?

Looking at the XLS part 10 30 455 also suggests 4mm, but part 10 20 451/452 suggest 5mm so I couldn't make a decision yet... Reading the above thread suggest 4mm is bare minimum, so best is 5mm steel. Would that be correct and teh XLS is wrong??

Ries,
I think the excel sheet did NOT get updated with the last updates to the plans. I would go with the 5mm as called for in the current drawing set. :)

5mm is better. I must change the xls sheet.

Alright,

thanks for the info! Currently I am placing orders for the stepper motors and the gecko drives, gathering more photo's for Jairo so he has a better understanding off the machine. He has no internet and doesn't speak English, so I do a lot of translation for him :)
