Hi Gerald,
Do we need a Topical area for reporting problems? Just a suggestion...

I have noted a problem with the Forum in that when I select "Check new messages", then go look at the first message......... That works fine, however, when I use my back arrow (i am using Firefox browser) all of my "new messages" are then gone.

The "Check new messages" is a nice feature that I would like to use, but after clicking on the first new message, and then returning to the list, everything is gone.....???

Maybe you can check this out and see if it is broke.

Regards,

Wayneo

Hi Wayne, when you use your back button you are effectively checking for new messages *again* and so you find none. When I use that feature, I right-click the links and open new windows, leaving the search results window intact.

But I will see if there is a setting that can be changed.....

I've just checked the Discusware support forum and found this:

"When you search for new messages since your last check, it consists of several actions: verify your username and password, look up the time of your most recent search, display all messages since that time, and record the time of your current search with your profile. That way, next time you search, your current search will be your most recent.

However, if you go back and the browser reloads the results of your search, this effectively clears your results by performing the same search once again.

My suggestion to prevent this is to use the profile option that opens results in a new window. This way, you completely avoid using the back button. I suspect that the reloading of the search results is a browser-specific issue -- using a back button should not cause the page to be reloaded, and there is no Discus code that tells the browser to refresh the page every time it's viewed."

So, the only reliable way is to open new windows. You can change the settings in your profile so that new windows are opened automatically for you.

This is the section in your profile page setup:

1

If your browser insists on refreshing pages when you go back (instead of looking in the cache) you want to check the box "When searching, open resulting pages in a new window"

I must admit that from this side there is something that encourages browsers to refresh the whole page, but this is a typical thing for discussion forums. It let's you see the recent posts.

Gerald:
Over the last several days when I open the main forum page I have noticed that occationally the "new" tag for the threads will be present. However when I go to that folder and look for the "new" comment, there is nothing there. {ex.} today under the 20. Gantry forum it noted that you had posted. {12-10-06 06:18 am Gerald_D} when I went to read the post it was not in the file. I also noted that there where supossed to be 5 threads in that main catagory, but there where only four. Can you clarify what is happening? I don't want to miss any of the posts here at the MachMate site they are SO INFORMATIVE.

Thank you for the excellent forum, and kudos to all those who have contributed here.

Bob C.

Hi Bob,

I move posts a lot, to try and get them into more topical threads. Sometimes I create new threads with a temporary "Open thread" post, move posts into that new thread, and then delete the first temporary post. The problem is that the tags and front page are generated when the posts are first made, and they do not keep track of moved posts.

A good solution is to search on the last day, last 3 days, last week buttons (the last 1|3|7 Days buttons at the top), but the best solution is to use the Check New Messages button after logging in. (You must log in first for this work correctly)

My bookmarked page goes to:
http://www.mechmate.com/Forum/search.cgi?stype=n&nmsm=2&where=all&username=Geral d_d&password=******* , you can figure out how to modify this url to suit your username and password.
This way you will catch everything.

Thanks for the kudo's

In fact this thread is going illustrate the point perfectly. The first two posts will be moved to Forum problems & broken links - please report here and this post will probably be deleted. :-)

Edited to say: Okay, the move has been made.

Hi Gerald, Is is possible to have the 5 or so images adjacent to MechMate Forum header click for larger images? It looks like there are some additional details there that I have not seen in the body of the forum. Thanks
Stephen

Stephen, those are small pics rotating at random (click the refresh button and they should change). They are meant as "teasers", but they are actually way out of date, and some don't have any connection to the current MechMate. The full size pics are either at this forum or are not applicable. Besides, I don't know how to make clickable links to random pictures.

Here is a .zip of all those thumbnails. I might still remember what they were if you ask about specific ones.

This Monday morning, April 16th, my service provider lost a database server computer for a few hours. Some recent posts were lost, as well as some new members. Apologies to everyone.

Is anyone on this forum having problems with pages that are too long, or download too slowly with dial-up modems?

I remember now that until only a few months ago I wouldn't have been able to load this thread (2.4MB) on dial-up. I would like to accommodate everybody, especially those in disadvantaged situations with poor infrastructure or low budgets. Please drop me a PM if you are having problems.
